Congressman Jim Gerlach (PA-06) urges colleagues to pass H.R. 1509. This legislation includes a provision that Gerlach sponsored to review the use of smart-card technology in hopes of saving an estimated $48 billion per year in improper payments in the Medicare program. It is money that should be going to pay for the treatment and care seniors have earned. The legislation also would remove Social Security numbers from the front of Medicare cards -- a common sense step that would keep personal information out of the hands of identity thieves.
