In general, indentured servants were adult white persons
from Britain and the continent who were bound out to labor from
two to seven years and included three classes: the redemptioners
or free willers who sold their services in exchange for passage
to America; those who were kidnapped or were forced out of the mother
country because of poverty or political or religious reasons; and
convicts. During the late 1600s until 1730 the majority were English;
between 1730 and the early 1800s they were principally German and
Scotch-Irish. The history of redemptioners and indentured servants
in the 18th and 19th centuries in Philadelphia includes a discussion
of fraudulent means used by unscrupulous recruiting agents in Europe,
and the establishment of benevolent societies to aid impoverished
newcomers.
