Fuck Don Pablo Pedro at Pandemic

Tonight! The street-art friendly Pandemic Gallery is holding an opening party for the solo show of artist Don Pablo Pedro, entitled “Fuck Don Pablo Pedro.”

While Don Pablo Pedro himself has been working for years, he says it wasn’t until he was laid up after a surgery that amputated one testicle that he was really able to bring his art to fruition. Appropriately, most of his imagery features sexual mutations, violence, and depravity.

This show is made up of muslin scrolls painted with, as he puts it:

“anatomical abnormalities, oozing orifices, and sexual oddities. Pasty figures desecrate one another situated in an empty space, alone, or engaged with others in orgasmic and violent activity.”

So come for the drinks, stay for the art, and leave guaranteed to have the most frightening wet dreams imaginable.

Pandemic is at 37 Broadway between Kent and Wythe.

Free Things For The End of July Weekend

FINALLY Mama Nature has chilled out, meaning this weekend is shaping up to be epic, and no doubt we’ll all be out in full force.

Tonight, if there are still tickets left, put down the styrofoam cups and head across from McCarren to the Animation Block Party at the Automotive High School, where starting at 8p The Big Sleep will woo you before a smathering of great animation shorts. After party is at Matchless, if not all over the streets. Tickets are $10.

If you’re rather in the free/arty mood, check out the Devotion Gallery right now, whose exhibition AIRtime opens tonight with some pretty interesting collabs.
-

If you don’t mind leaving the hood and hearing some good music, the much-loved Chad Vangaalen plays at the South Street Seaport series with rising stars Avi Buffalo.

Speaking of animation, did we mention that Chad’s make our day?

One last option is to head down south to Prospect Park Bandshell and see The Swell Season (made famous as the stars of film Once) and The Low Anthem rock out.

-
SATURDAY
-

Beautiful day. Check out a few of these, please.

Greenpoint’s Human Chess-to-the-Death Match

Renowned Italian conceptual artist and two-time Milano Chess Invitational Champion Santo Tolone will face-off against locally lauded Douglas Paulson in Greenpoint’s Human Chess-to-the-Death Match.

Please join these competitors on the sidelines, or better yet: on the battlefield. It will take nerves of steel to be one of the 32 pieces. This is not an exercise in standing still. There will be dance moves, cussing, war-cries, face painting, and many many secret tricks up your sleeves. (Those sleeves, drinks, and tricks will be provided.)

In Dougherty Park
[h/t Nonsense]

If we weren’t already busy trying to catch Animal Collective and Sonic Youth, we’d be dancing the day away at Frolic, the annual electronic music dance party in Central Park…

-

Or stay in the ‘burg and check out Vol.2 of JellyNYC’s ROCKYARD concert series. The bands are none-too-familiar, but the videos freak us out in a wonderful way that recalls the WTF-ness of the Cheryl parties.
-

-

Also highly recommended is Pierogi gallery’s 2nd space, The Boiler, which will be showing Gregory Barsamian‘s incredible kinetic sculpture Saturday and Sunday only, noon-6pm before the show closes. Don’t miss it.

And for all the Zine-sters out there, you’ll be torn between the Mini Zine Fest at Pete’s Candy Store from 3-7pm and/or heading to Manhattan for The Camera Club of NY’s Zine and Self–Published Photo Book Fair from 1–6pm in its gallery space at 336 West 37th Street, Suite 206.

-
SUNDAY

This Afternoon
Cloudy with a chance of showers with isolated thunderstorms. Near steady temperature in the lower 80s. Southeast winds around 10 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.

Too bad, when two ladies such as tUnE YarDs and St. Vincent will be making Central Park even lovelier this afternoon.

-

If you wanna play it safer, take advantage of free coconut water, DJ sets, Darlings and Ted Leo at the Pool Parties’ Block Party.

But the real surprise free show tonight is Julian Lynch, The Sunsheds, and Baby Alpaca at The Delancey. Doors open at 8 for this, so there’s no excuse for not coming here after the afternoon traipsing.

Broken Social Scene's This Movie(?) Is Broken

We got a chance to check out the new Broken Social Scene film This Movie Is Broken last night which was directed by Bruce McDonald. Bruce had been trying to figure out a way to make a movie with BSS for years, but it was always difficult to get approval from the many members of the band. He thought the project would never come to life until last summer when he finally came up with an idea that front men Kevin Drew & Brendan Canning loved. Once the idea was approved, the turn around was incredibly fast. He secured funding on a Wednesday and was scheduled to shoot during a previously planned performance on Saturday. Knowing what their reaction would be, Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning decided it would be easier not to tell the band about the movie. After arriving at the venue and seeing all the film equipment set up everyone began to catch on and were initially upset, but eventually agreed.

Overall the film felt less like a full movie and more like a live concert with bits of a love story sandwiched in between. The story was weak and had a weird twist at the end, but the awesome Broken Social Scene concert made up for it. The filmmakers are still trying to figure out a US distribution plan, but if you really want to see the movie..well, you’ll have to drive to Canada.

Young Man Turns Youtube Stardom Into Haunting Debut Release

Opening with beach waves and strumming simplicity Young Man’s debut release, aptly named Boy, brings us straight into a summery trance of hypnotic proportions. Slowly unfolding into the more hopeful “Hands”, we imagine Panda Bear and Fleet Foxes having a brain child and naming him Colin Caulfield– which should ring a bell to us Youtube obsessed music lovers.

Caulfield, who has made it a habit to post hauntingly beautiful covers of notable bands such as Deerhunter, Animal Collective, and now Beach House’s “Heart of Chambers”, even garnered attention from those he has recently emulated. Bradford Cox, Deerhunter’s leading man, recently noted Caulfield’s rendition of “Rainwater Cassette Exchange” as “fantastically superior to the original.”

“It actually sent shivers up my spine, especially during the second verse,” Cox noted.

Boy closes with “Up So Fast”, that we can only assume is the title track with the repetitive declaration of “I’m a boy, I’m a little boy” — which is not just a call to losing touch with childhood but foreshadows a seriously blooming career for a Young Man. The 7 song album is streaming over yonder, and it’s sure to make your day. You can check out Young Man’s NYC debut at Governor’s Island on August 7th, opening for Local Natives, while you longingly await the October 12th release of Boy on Frenchkiss Records.

Ninja of Die Antwoord was in town last weekend for that Governor’s Island show and left a little “Thank You” note for Bushwick.

We’ve got the rest after the jump. [via]

Broke Ass Stuart's Guide to the Cheap Life

c/o Julie Michelle

Earlier this year (ironically enough, on April Fools Day), I had the honor of holding title as Broke Ass of the Week for a website that knows a thing or two about how to get by on a dime– Broke Ass Stuart’s Goddamn Website. Unfortunately for me, no one screams April Fools when this girl checks her bank account.

After making internet friends with Stuart, we decided it would be fun to have the brokeitude savvy Editor-In-Cheap answer his very own Broke Ass questions.

What makes him an expert, you ask? Well, he’s written two books on how to live cheap in San Francisco and New York– basically doing all the research (i.e. drinking a lot) for you. And although the blog itself is based out of SF, the NY section is lengthy enough to keep us going back for more.

So read the rest of the interview after the jump to learn the perks of pulling out, garbage plates, and how money can buy you a houseboy to throw your shoes at.

Name: Broke-Ass Stuart

Age: 29 but I don’t look a day older than 28 and a half.

Occupation: Travel Writer and mouth piece for the young, broke and beautiful.

What neighborhood do you live in?: Currently in San Francisco’s Mission district, but I always say I’m bi-coastal curious.  While I no longer live in Brooklyn, I was there five times last year.

What are you listening to these days?: Richie Cunning.  Hip-hop hasn’t sounded this good in WAY too long.

Best money saving tip: Buy my books and read my site.  If you like cheap stuff and shit talking, you my friend have just happened upon a goldmine.

What do you refuse to spend money on?: Condoms.  I only trust the pull out method and abortions…but really, I refuse to spend money on anything that’s supposed to be “in right now”.  I’d rather have the stupidest looking shoes and wear them because they’re comfortable, than look back at picture of myself and think, “Wow, not only did I look like a total cheese dick, but those shits hurt my feet too.”

Lights On Lacks Sunshine, And We Like It

In case you missed San Diego-based Lights On in New York these last few weeks, here’s a little video of their first single, “We Live Underground”, to hold you over until the return of a left coast group that boasts a serious nomenclature– a taste of post punk, surf, psych, new wave, indie, etc. This is, what I imagine, Depeche Mode would’ve sounded like if they grew up on the sunny side of the globe.

Lights On debut album, Here Comes The Ocean, is out now and you should snatch it up quick. If you need more convincing, just take a listen to “Red Lights Flashing” before you head out for the night and you’ll be sold, we promise.

The Mast Brothers: Chocolate Makers and Sailors?

The Mast Brothers, self-proclaimed leaders of the chocolate revolution, are taking off on a sailboat for the Dominican Republic in order to get some more scrumptious cacao beans to satisfy our cravings. Now, they don’t need to sail the sacks of raw ingredients back up the Atlantic but they are– because they just want to. [Thanks Ed! Via The Scout]

The life of a mariner is one given over to wanderlust—the quest for adventure, crossing unseen horizons to secure precious goods—only to bring them back to their home port. This same love of adventure and curiosity defines the brotherhood of Rick and Michael Mast.

Video: "Ritalin" by Dancing Pigeons

This flamethrower vs. fire extinguisher battle wins the morning:

Comes our way via Laughing Squid, which notes the “video was shot almost entirely on a Phantom camera at 1000fps.”
