Here’s What North Brooklyn Has Planned For Tomorrow’s “May Day”

Facebook

The national Occupy movement is planning a “May Day” general strike tomorrow. The Facebook event page has 25,000 attendees and while some locations are hosting specific events, the main plan is for “NO WORK – NO SCHOOL – NO SHOPPING – NO BANKING – NO TRADING.”

“The goal is to shut down commerce worldwide and show the 1% we will not be taken for granted, we will not be silenced, WE WILL NOT MOVE until our grievances are redressed,” organizers write on Facebook.

In Williamsburg and Bushwick – where we’ve seen Occupiers in action before – groups are joining forces in a march over the Williamsburg Bridge and into Wall Street. Occupy Bushwick invites participants to meet at Maria Hernandez Park at 8am. From there the group will march to Continental Army Plaza and meet up with Occupy Williamsburg, followed by a march over the bridge and into lower Manhattan.

1st Annual Mustard Festival

Personally, I’m going through a brussel sprouts smothered in dijon mustard phase but this truffled honey mustard on a pretzel doesn’t sound so bad. Maybe we can get a mayonnaise fest next?

The First Annual Brooklyn Mustard Festival is happening Saturday, April 28th, in the beer garden at T.B.D. Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn from 12-5. It will be a celebration of mustard in all of its pungency and richness, its nobility and sloppiness. A smattering of vendors — mostly local but some distant — will be offering up an array of mustards and mustard-based delicacies. You’ll find mustard styles ranging from smooth dijon to stone ground, in flavors ranging from mustard with green peppercorn to mustard with truffled honey to mustard made with Six Point beer. Mustard hailing from one of New York’s oldest mustard companies, and mustard from local, small-batch artisans. We’ll have chutneys featuring mustard seed, mustard-flavored pickles, and a terrific mustard herring. Vendors will make all of their products available for sampling and purchase. In addition, we’ll have for sale delicious soft pretzels (Sigmund’s) and some of Brooklyn’s finest hot dogs and sausages (The Meat Hook) to spread your favorite mustards on, and T.B.D.’s extensive beer list will give you plenty of options to pair your food with.

Saturday, April 28 12-5

The Most Blogged About Shows This Week

The Shins

Man, I feel like all you hear about these days are band reunions.  Not that it’s always a bad thing.  I’m just getting the sense that a good chunk of them are cash grabs for bands that were MAYBE semi-relevant a decade ago.  Release some new material, at least…

Before I dive into this week’s usual spiel… I have a VENUE ALERT for you.

Just when you thought you’ve seen everything, and have been to a show EVERYWHERE, another new DIY spot pops up.  It’s hard to keep track of ‘em, but I thought I’d give a heads up to a newer space down in Bed-Stuy called Big Mouth.

The venue, located in the basement of 834 Myrtle Ave, was founded by the owners of Rooftop Shout Records. They originally planned on hosting house parties in the high-ceilinged, over-sized basement, but the space begged for more.  A couple months later, someone let them have a PA on the cheap, a street-art crazed friend went nuts all over the walls and now they’re selling out ragers twice a month in the 200 capacity space.  Co-founder Rowan Antony Bado envisions utilizing the space for more innovative, conceptual shows.

Pat Kiernan Is Moving to Williamsburg

Must have something to do with his love of The Gutter. Evidently, NY’s favorite news anchor paid 2 mil for his townhouse. His gig as the new Regis must be paying him well.

NY1’S PAT Kiernan, every hipster’s favorite morning anchor, is moving from Manhattan to Williamsburg. Kiernan paid $2.02 million for an unassuming-looking three-story, four-bedroom townhouse with aluminum siding on Bedford Ave., records show. The Brownstoner blog called it the highest price ever paid for a single-family home in the Brooklyn neighborhood.

The 2,600-square-foot address is right in the crowded heart of world’s biggest hipster hangout. Even the Duane Reade on Bedford Ave. has a bar in it.

But Kiernan, who gets up at 3 a.m., may find it hard to enjoy the nightlife at his new doorstep.

Kiernan, 43, his wife and two daughters are moving from W. 75th St. on the staid upper West Side. He’s angling to go to national TV by stepping into Regis Philbin’s shoes as co-host of “Live! with Kelly.”

Inside The Band Rooms and Lofts Of The Wythe Hotel

Wythe Hotel

The long-anticipated Wythe Hotel finally opens on Tuesday and according to its website, it “has rooms for artists, friends, brewmasters, musicians, concertgoers, mothers, brothers, grandmothers, bowlers, interns, twins, engineers, vignerons, and chefs.” That just about covers the major demographics of gentrified Brooklyn (aside from dog walkers, bathtub whiskey distillers, and locavores).

The hotel offers eight types of rooms, including ones that are “lofts,” “band rooms,” and “historic.” Many of these rooms offer “industrial detailing” like pine wood ceilings and exposed brick, all of which date to 1901. Check out descriptions of some of the rooms after the jump.

Donna: New High Design Bar Opens in Williamsburg

Via TableTalk

“It evokes both an Art Deco parlor room and a Spanish colonial cathedral,” Huckman says of the décor. The dramatically rounded high ceiling — beautiful and impossible to ignore — disguises multiple layers of soundproofing, cushioning noise that might migrate upstairs to the neighbors. Bar stools are fastidiously and playfully tiled by hand in eight-bit patterns. Even the floors tell a story: Greenpoint’s Tall Cotton Supply sourced the reclaimed pine salvaged from a 1906 Philadelphia apartment building.

Like the décor, food and drink offerings are spirited and original. “The cocktail menu is lighthearted and approachable,” says the bar manager Jeremy Oertel (of Dram and Mayahuel). “Some of the drinks are stirred and boozy. Others are light and refreshing, and then I threw a couple oddballs in there just for fun.” Basically, there’s a tipple for everyone. Original concoctions include the subtly smoky Scarlet Fever: shaken tequila blanco, Mezcal, peach liqueur and lime juice, poured into a Champagne coupe and finished with a spicy salt rim. (more…)
