Animal Collective’s Own Amanda Palmer Kickstarter Scandal

Via Pitchfork

If the recent Amanda Palmer controversy has accomplished anything — besides getting some people paid to play their instruments — it’s made music fans take a harder look at the ethics of crowd-sourced funding in artistic endeavors. One subject of the intensified scrutiny has been Animal Collective’s Josh Dibb, aka Deakin, who raised nearly $26,000 on Kickstarter in 2009. The funds were to go towards Deakin’s trip to perform at the Festival in the Desert in Mali, Africa, the creation of a book and CD, and a charitable donation to TEMEDT, a Mali organization working to help enslaved black Tuareg people.

And here’s Deacon’s response: (more…)

Italian restaurant Fabbrica Has Soft Opening in Williamsburg

Fabbrica

Fabbrica (c/o Zagat)

We can’t wait to check it out:

Fabbrica, a café-bakery, pastry shop, and eventual full-service Italian restaurant is now offering baked goods, espresso, and sandwiches until the kitchen’s imminent opening. There’s no set date for the full rollout, but owner Alberto Baudo (who also has Acqua at Peck Slip) hopes it will be in the next week or two. Until construction is finished on the open kitchen, patrons can enjoy an espresso and an assortment of sweets from pastry chef Mirco Del Cecchio — formerly of Balthazar — under the dining room’s seventeen-foot ceilings.

Fabbrica, which means factory in Italian, pays homage to Brooklyn’s manufacturing years with an ironclad exterior, a bar decorated with old gears, large wooden communal tables, and a painted Williamsburg Bridge and Domino Sugar factory mural spanning the length of the back wall.

The menu isn’t final, but with executive chef Simone Bonelli — formerly of Modena, Italy’s three Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana — leading the kitchen, it promises to feature fresh, innovative Italian cuisine.

Fabbrica, 40 N. 6th St., at Kent Ave.; 718-218-7045

Grouper – The OK Cupid of Group Dating – Coming to Williamsburg/Greenpoint

Via DNA

Michael Waxman, 25, who created Grouper last year to set up three-on-three group dates (or “networking sessions,” if that makes you feel more comfortable), is setting up shop with his site starting this week, with cocktail sessions in popular North Brooklyn bars and cafes like Milk and Roses and Mable’s Smokehouse….

In Grouper, you submit your Facebook profile, set up preferences for whom you would like to meet (including age and other characteristics), and then let the site’s algorithms and staff do the work. They pick one other person of the opposite sex, and tell you both to bring two friends of your own gender to the time and place Grouper selects. Then you all meet, drink and see how everyone connects…

And now that the company is expanding to Brooklyn (and nine other cities) this fall, Waxman said Williamsburg was the ideal launch pad.

“I think Williamsburg, with its great nightlife scene, is the place to kick off Grouper in Brooklyn,” he said.

More at Grouper.

‘Dosa Hunt’ To Debut in Williamsburg

Members of Vampire Weekend, Das Racist, Yeasayer, and Neon Indian appear in the film which will debut at Nitehawk Cinema on Friday 10/5, Saturday 10/6, and Monday 10/8! Dosas and samosas provided by Anjappar. From the Nitehawk:

“The Greatest Hunt For South Indian Food In NYC Ever Committed To Film!”

DOSA HUNT is an independent short documentary featuring Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, Das Racist’s Himanshu Suri & Ashok “Dapwell” Kondabolu, Yeasayer’s Anand Wilder, Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo, jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, and Stereogum’s Executive Editor Amrit Singh — a group of music-world friends on a quest for their hometown’s best dosa. The traditional South Indian crepe is delicious enough to make a movie about, though our heroes’ journey doubles as an exploration of the shared and respective cultures of a vibrant group of NYC artists in the wilds of their city. DOSA HUNT is a snapshot of a transitional generation in America’s immigrant/art experience, in hot pursuit of good food.

The film’s premiere and opening run are at Nitehawk Cinema on Friday 10/5, Saturday 10/6, and Monday 10/8. Each ticket comes with dosa and samosa provided by Anjappar, while each screening will be followed by a Q&A moderated by music television great John Norris and an afterparty with free beer compliments of Kingfisher and DJ sets by DFA Records artist REWARDS (Friday), Jagjaguwar Records’ artist Small Black (Saturday), and Quinn Walker of Frenchkiss Records outfit Suckers (Monday).

Friday and Saturday doors and drinks start at 11PM, seating and food service is at 12:15AM, the screening is at 12:30AM, and the Q&A panel commences immediately thereafter. (Monday’s doors are at 1PM with the same schedule of events.) It will be a lot of fun, you should consider coming.

Get tickets here.
