A new bar brought to you from the owners of Five Leaves called “Nights and Weekends” adjacent to McCarren Park is now officially open for business. Nights and Weekends features a selection of liquor that’s very rum heavy (think Island beverages along the lines of frozen pisco sours, Red Stripe beer, Malbec wines from Argentina and Chilean Carmeneres), and a menu inspired by Cuba and the West Indies. We hear that the waffles slathered with spiced rum butter are a must order.
If you’re thinking the themed menu might be a bit much, remember that Nights and Weekends isn’t a cheesy themed bar, “We were careful not to skew too tiki,” says Dan Sabo, one of the bartenders. “This isn’t a Hawaiian shirt sort of list. Instead, it’s cocktails for pirates and desperadoes.”

Promoting his brand new album “Noise of Welcome”, Zachary Cale played an in-store show last night at Academy Records Annex in Williamsburg. The video edit below features 2 new songs from that set, one of which is on his latest record.
McKibben has never been the cleanest or most idyllic residence in all of New York. But at least it was home and you could go to a party and have tye-dye parties, and you could feel relatively safe there. Unfortunately, there has been a string of violent crimes hitting the lofts lately. According to Gothamist.
gun-toting robbers have started breaking into the apartments, robbing tenants of their expensive toys: “Give me all your stuff, I have a gun, I shoot people,” said one robber before snagging his victim’s laptops, cellphones, iPods and Xbox games. In the past two weeks, there have been three robberies within the building, plus another mugger who stole a woman’s iPhone in front of the building as she was coming home from work.
Up until now, the lineup for 4Knots, the Village Voice’s South Street Seaport replacement for the Siren Fest, has seemed basically like a snooze-a-palooza. But today, The Voice announced that on July 9th, before the actual festival which is on July 16th, they will hold a kickoff show at the Seaport featuring Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.
Leo is, of course, fresh off covering Minor Threat for the Our Band Could Be Your Life tribute concert over the weekend; he played the 4Knots predecessor Siren in 2003 and last year; and he and the Seaport have quite the history, weather-and-concert-wise.
We are in agreement with Gothamist on this one when they say, “Ted Leo is amazing, but he can’t be the only one holding up this mist tent.”
Relapse recording artists Dysryhthmia played a show at The Silent Barn last Saturday. Heavily focusing on new material, the band tore through a killer 40 minute set of instrumental mayhem. 2 of those new songs can be found in the video below.
Finally, after what feels like such a long time of being teased with a slow stream of singles, Cults are finally ready to give us their full-length debut. They got picked up by Columbia Records after putting out their Go Outside 7” early last year. On this self-titled album, the duo of Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin manage to produce ’60s-tinged pop songs that are not of the spacey, Brian Wilson inspired but really just made for stoners genre. But more throwing back to the innocent and good ol’ fashioned fun. It manages to be a great indie pop offering just in time for us to play during every summer BBQ.
Starting May 21, we’re launching an all-food bonanza called “Smorgasburg”—every Saturday at the new Williamsburg site from 9am to 5pm. Smorgasburg (thank Brownstoner for the name and Camden for the awesome design) will feature 100+ food vendors—packaged, cooked, raw, Mason Jar’d, and more—as well as a bonafide GrowNYC Greenmarket with 15-20 farmers (see lineup below).

But right now what we want are the very best food vendors/purveyors/growers anywhere to apply for Smorgasburg, so we can create the next phase of local/regional market, and also make the tastiest/healthiest/friendliest food available to as many people as possible.
