Adam Quirk is a Park Slope-based video producer behind “Vuvuzelas for BP,” a Kickstarter project that’s been getting some traction lately for its aim to buy a shitload of vuvuzelas, pass them out around BP headquarters in London, and have people blow on them all day, every day, until BP fixes the gushing oil spill in the Gulf. Quite frankly, it’s genius. His goal of raising $2,000 is nearly 75% complete, and with 7 days to go on the Kickstarter timeline, it’s looking quite likely that this will happen.

We reached out to Adam to get the story and ask a few questions after seeing a link to the project blow up on Reddit. Adam told us, “I’m very happy that people have gotten behind this. I think the response has been so positive mainly because it’s seemingly a fun mixture of memes, and the end result is a net positive in that BP gets real-world pressure, and the Gulf Fund gets real money.”

FREEwilliamsburg: What gave you the idea?

Adam Quirk: It was inspired by the incredible annoyance of millions of people by the vuvuzela drone on all the World Cup broadcasts, and the seemingly cold indifference postured by Tony Hayward in his Congressional hearings. I am a video remix artist, so it’s sort of my job to combine memes and current events to make new things.

FW: How has the internet community’s (namely: reddit) attention, feedback, and/or support affected your plans & expectations?

Let’s think about all the people that commute to the city every morning. THE CONGESTION IS INSANE ALREADY. Not only will the L train become un-usable (which is practically is every morning) but it’s going to literally change the vibe, and eventually culture of the neighborhood, and not in a good way. The dust, noise, etc that goes along with this construction is going to be HORRIBLE and especially damaging to the new buildings and businesses such as Glasslands Gallery and the new IndieScreen.

dude, you’re one stop away from manhattan, and the earth’s population is going to rise by another 30% in the next 40 years. how do you think that your neighborhood is not going to change? if you’re worried about the stress on public transporation, then argue for better public transportation. don’t argue against infill development. infill (as opposed to sprawl) is the most environmentally sensitive (and socially smart) way to build housing, and more housing will always be needed. not to mention, using an existing building is also recycling!

It’s a go. The 36-floor project, which will create 2,200 apartments (660 of which will actually be affordable), 143,000 sq. feet of community, office, and retail space, keep the iconic sign, and create some new waterfront space, will break ground in one year and take ten years to complete.

Here’s the good:

During last-minute negotiations, the developer agreed to reduce two planned 40-story towers to 36 floors. The lost space from those floors will be added to other buildings on the site. The corporation also agreed that construction, building service and eventual supermarket workers at the New Domino would be paid prevailing wages.

and from before, the bad:

Levin (D-Williamsburg) and his mentor, Brooklyn Democratic boss Vito Lopez (D-Bushwick), had railed against the project, leading rallies against it and charging that thousands of new residents would overwhelm the neighborhood, especially already-packed subways and buses.

The Kahbang Music and Arts Festival launched last summer in Bangor, Maine with Matt & Kim and Ra Ra Riot headlining — but it’s still relatively unheard-of. This year Kahbang will be running from August 6-14, and the list of performers includes Ok Go, Biz Markie, The Gay Blades, BoB, Free Energy and more. There will be plenty of art installations and a film festival portion as well.

Kahbang’s concept is to translate some of the live music energy from Brooklyn way up north. And in that spirit, we’re offering two pairs of VIP passes to FreeWilliamsburg readers. The video, directed by Taryn Gould and Emily Kowalczyk, is a preview of “Keep It Quiet,” a song from Ra Ra Riot’s upcoming album The Orchard. The band’s second full-length album releases August 24th on Barsuk.

Last night women’s fashion and lifestyle website StyleCaster bolstered its Indie cred by co-hosting a free Beach Fossils show with music website Death + Taxes at Santos Party House.

A more aggressive spin on the lo-fi genre while still maintaining its approachable simplicity, Beach Fossils riled the crowd. A barefoot John Pena lost his mind on the bass– pacing and spinning all over the stage– while lead singer Dustin Payseur howled into his microphone… And that’s when the crowd surfing began… at 10PM… on a Tuesday night… at a fashion event. (Who saw that one coming?) The set ended with Payseur himself leaping onto the crowd, surfing until his song ended when the human pillars supporting him crumbled to the ground.
