The Most Blogged About Shows This Week

Radiohead

So… the My Social List top ten for the week is broken right now.  All we have for you is a top four, until we get things straightened out.  Why?  Because we deleted the Bobby Womack and Willis Earl Beal Summer Stage show that is being rescheduled for sometime in July.   For some reason, it made everything all wonky.  The show is being rescheduled due to “sickness” of some kind, but I’m guessing it has more to do with Willis Earl Beal’s detainment from kicking a homeless man in the face in Amsterdam.  He’s since been released, but that kick had ramifications beyond his wildest dreams… namely, it means this list is going to be ORGANICALLY CURATED by me.

The most blogged about show this week is a no-brainer; algorithm or not, and that’s Radiohead and Caribou at the Prudential Center.  The My Social List machine seems to feel that tonight’s set is more blogged than tomorrow’s set, but I’m envious of anyone who got tickets to either night.  Well, kind of.  I definitely would have coughed up the dough to see Radiohead this time around, had I not been one of the lucky few who was able to secure tickets to one of their Roseland shows this past September.  I will say this: If you’re a King of Limbs detractor, like I was, be prepared to be reborn, because all of the songs sound absolutely incredible live.

If you’re not schlepping out to Newark tonight, schlep to downtown Brooklyn instead, because Thurston Moore is playing a set, consisting largely of songs off of his excellent LP, Psychic Hearts, at Roulette tonight.  He’ll be joined by Bill Nace and Joe McPhee.  I caught his set at Maxwell’s earlier this year and you definitely won’t want to miss this one.  It’s not Sonic Youth… but it’s the next best thing, no disrespect to Lee Ranaldo (who also put on a great show at Glasslands in January.)

There’s a lot of great options for you this weekend, beginning with tUnE-yArDs Terminal 5 show tomorrow night, and ending with Blondes, JDH & Dave P and Paul Raffaele at the Dekalb Market on Sunday.  SANDWICHED IN BETWEEN, there’s Porcelain Raft, Firehorse & Jane Jane Pollock at Mercury Lounge tomorrow; Woodsman, Dustin Wong & Jovontaes Herbcraft at Big Snow Buffalo Lounge (also tomorrow); and a BIRTHDAY PARTY and loft shitshow over at Cheap Storage in Bushwick with Total Slacker, Night Manager, Heaven’s Gate and Turnip King Saturday night.  You’ll want to catch that one if you’ve managed to miss Total Slacker or Night Manager over the past year (and if you go to shows, I’m not sure if that’s possible), as they’re heading out on a mini-tour of the east coast/mid-west in June.

Nassau Avenue Has A Major Rat Problem

D-W-J-S's flickr (all rights reserved)

Stores and homes near Nassau Avenue in Greenpoint have a rat problem and locals are blaming the major construction project that started last month, NY Daily News reports. One shopkeeper said he caught four rats, while a homeowner said he found eighteen. One landlord on Nassau Ave. described rats being “as big as cats.”

The Department of Design and Construction responded to complaints by saying they will increase their exterminations from once a month to every two weeks.

This Weekend: Bon Appetite Grub Crawl

This looks way more interesting than GoogaMooga.

Bon Appetit Grub Crawl will take you on a hands-on, interactive food tour at ground zero of the artisanal-food universe. In true Brooklyn form, you’ll experience food and drink up-close, hang with the chefs, get your hands dirty, roll up your sleeves, and peek in the kitchen in the back, as opposed to just being served in the front. And if that’s not enough, on Saturday it culminates in can’t-miss music performances.

FRIDAY: Carroll Gardens
Clover Club, Frankies/Prime Meats, Seersucker, Treats Truck

SATURDAY: Williamsburg
Meatball Shop, Maison Premiere, Allswell, Brooklyn Winery, Rye, music at the Knitting Factory

SUNDAY: Red Hook
Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Fort Defiance, The Good Fork, Mile End, Sunny’s

Belvedere Vodka Lemon Tea will served be at each stop. Tickets can be purchased here.

Zombies Crawled Through The ‘Burg On Sunday (But Florida Had A Real Zombie)

Twitter

While you were laying on a roof somewhere and eating a hot dog on Sunday, zombies briefly occupied the neighborhood as part of the annual NYC Zombie Crawl. Participants donned head to toe zombie makeup and tattered clothing and traveled from Trash Bar to Grand Victory, McCarren Park, Spike Hill, and Public Assembly. The first stop had had makeup artists for the not-so-DIY-ers, while the other stops had live music, contests, drink specials, and giveaways.

As horrifying as some of the Brooklyn zombies may have looked, nothing comes close to the real life “zombie” incident that same day. As you’ve probably read by now, Florida police shot and killed a naked man who was eating the face of another man on the side of a causeway. Not only was he consuming human flesh, but it took multiple bullets to take him out. Authorities believe he was in a drug-induced paralysis, but if that doesn’t sound like the beginning of a George Romero film, we don’t know what does.

For those of you interested, zombies originate from the voodoo tradition in which priests used rituals and powders to turn enemies into the “walking dead.” The term “zombie” first appeared in print in 1792 as a Creole word meaning spirit, but unlike other Hollywood monsters like the werewolf or vampire, the zombie as we know it today has no literary tradition. The creatures first appeared in film in 1932′s White Zombie.
