The 2013 Massachusetts White Ribbon Day Campaign was officially launched on December 6, 2012 to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, where one man killed 14 women and injured another 10 women and 4 men. This is also the 21st anniversary of the International White Ribbon Campaign, a direct response to this tragic event.

about the meaning of December 6th:
“On December 6th, Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action
on Violence Against Women, we remember the 14 women killed in 1989
at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. We also remember the thousands
of women who have died as a result of gender-based violence around
the globe and stand in solidarity with the many women and children
for whom violence is a reality in their daily lives. On this day
and every day, let’s reflect on the important role we can all play,
especially men and boys, in advancing gender equality and ending
violence against women. The White Ribbon Campaign’s pledge “never
commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women”
is a call to action for every man and boy to think about and challenge
their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours and to work together towards
a more peaceful, equitable world for women and girls, men and boys.
We salute the work of Men’s Initiative for Jane Doe Inc. and the
work of the White Ribbon Campaigns around the globe. Let’s work
together to build a future without violence against women and girls.”

You too can become involved.
We’re taking our cue from the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights that speaks to how violence against
women is a human rights violation and how these abuses around the
world are obstacles to efforts for peace and gender equality in
all societies.
In addition, we link importantly with The United Nations Secretary
General’s new campaign UNited
to End Violence Against Women, which is celebrated on International
Women's Day, March 8th.
JDI invites you to sign on as a White Ribbon Day Ambassador and
participate in local activities across Massachusetts. You can show
your support by encouraging others in your organizations, families,
and workplaces to wear a white ribbon, place a poster up at their
workplaces, spread the word about the campaign and its aims, organize
local events to speak out against violence towards women, and challenge
attitudes and behaviors which condone or tolerate violence.

you can get involved, including tool kits for planning local events.
