Would Jesus Be An NRA Member?

Jesus, Republicans, Guns - http://mariopiperni.com/

Have you ever wondered where Jesus would stand on the Second Amendment? Well, according to National Review, there is little doubt that he would be a pro-gun lobby, shoot-em-up sort of guy.

The Democrats — ever vigilant for improper mixing of politics and religion — opened yesterday’s news conference announcing their proposed “assault weapons” ban with a prayer from the Dean of the National Cathedral, the Canon Gary Hall. As Drudge highlighted yesterday, he made brief remarks before the prayer and said, “Everyone in this city seems to live in terror of the gun lobby . . . but I believe that the gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby.”

I have no objection to the Reverand speaking his mind. In fact, I’m glad for clergy to contribute their thoughts to the gun-rights debate. My objection is to the substance of his position, not his participation in the debate. Simply put, self defense is a biblical and natural right of man, and I fear that his words imply otherwise. There is nothing about the cross that requires me to allow someone to kill my family — or anyone else for that matter. Indeed, I have a moral imperative to come to the aid of those in distress.

Here we go. Another right-wing attack on gun control that is completely baseless and irrelevant. One does not need the Bible to make the argument that self-defense is a natural right. Of course it is…but the type of changes to the gun laws that Dems have proposed have nothing to do with the right to defend oneself or protect family and property. The proposals have only to do with a) the type of guns one should be allowed to purchase and b) restricting gun ownership to law abiding citizens and others who do not pose a threat to society. Arguments don’t get any more rational than that.

That said, the entire premise that Jesus would be in support of NRA sponsored lunacy is ridiculous. One need only turn to Matthew 5:38 and Jesus’ own words to make the point that Jesus would have hated guns.

You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”. But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.

Jesus went a little too far with his turn-the-other-cheek bit, but it’s quite clear that claiming that he would have supported the gun lobby is a stretch.

Sullivan:

But when Jesus’s example is used to defend violence, to celebrate self-defense, to find ways to look away from the mass murder of children, beware. Jesus’ response to unspeakable violence was unconditional surrender and yet more still:

Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

Amen.

Senator Herman Cain?

Herman Cain / Sarah Palin - http://mariopiperni.com/

Do Dems have a chance in picking up a senate seat in 2014 as teabaggers pick off another semi-moderate Republican? Maybe.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), one of the Republicans most vulnerable to a conservative primary challenge, will retire in 2014 rather than seek a third term.

Chambliss denied in a statement Friday morning that the potential primary was a factor in his decision, saying he was confident he would have won re-election.

Despite his largely conservative record, Chambliss has attracted conservative ire for his interest in bipartisan compromise. His recent public break with anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist earned him particular scrutiny. He also struggled in the 2008 election, forced into a runoff with Democrat Jim Martin.

As long as the Tea Party has a say in matters, compromise will continue to be a 4-letter word in Republican politics.

The best part of this story is the polling which indicates that Herman Cain, should he decide to run (he says he won’t), would be a serious contender in a Republican primary for Chambliss’ seat. How beautiful would that be! Memories of Sharron Angle come to mind.

If there is a God, there will be a Herman Cain campaign to mock in 2014.

Late Night Political Humor

Humor - Late Night : http://mariopiperni.com/

With the election over, political humor isn’t what it was for those many months when the writers had Romney and Ryan as a source of inspiration. The jokes literally wrote themselves. It appears to be a lot more of a struggle now for the late night comics to come up with anything that even resembles funny.

I went through the week’s compilation of late night jokes (via Political Humor) and had a hard time picking out more than a handful that were worthy of this page. And even then…anyway, here’s what I came up with.

“Where did we go wrong? The Republicans had everything going for them – a terrible economy, an unpopular incumbent, and a positive message for the American voter: ‘less than half of you are parasites.’” –Stephen Colbert

“Video game-maker Atari has filed for bankruptcy. Atari fans are so upset they’re organizing a massive letter-writing campaign to President Reagan.” –Conan O’Brien

“Firearms groups across the country have declared today the first annual Gun Appreciation Day. So don’t forget to set your clock back 100 years.” –Seth Meyers

“The NRA made an ad saying that Obama is elitist because his kids have armed guards. Yeah, that crazy Obama thinking his kids need special protection. I love the NRA accusing anyone of being paranoid. It’s like a septic tank saying, ‘You need a mint.’” –Bill Maher

“The best advertisement for torture is not Dick Cheney and people like that who support it, it is Hollywood. At the Golden Globes, it’s movies. Ben Affleck won for playing a CIA officer, Claire Danes won for playing a CIA officer, Jessica Chastain won for playing a CIA officer and of course, Julianne Moore won for playing Sarah Palin, a master of counter intelligence.” –Bill Maher

“In a recent attack ad, the NRA claims that President Obama cares about his own children more than he cares about other children. In response, President Obama was like, ‘Yeah, that’s how families work.’” –Jimmy Fallon

See? And those were the best of the lot…but I did kinda like this next one. It fit in so well with my last post.

“Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant on Wednesday asked state legislatures to declare President Obama’s new gun control proposals ‘illegal,’ though I’m not sure if the Mississippi state legislature has that kind of power since it’s just thirty hissing possums in a barn.” –Seth Meyers

Mississippi’s Ranking Asshat – Gov. Phil Bryant

Health Care - SupremeCourt : http://mariopiperni.com/

Another day, another Republican fool.

During an interview with Kaiser Health News Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) said he opposes Obamacare because every single American already has the health care.

“There is no one who doesn’t have health care in America. No one. Now, they may end up going to the emergency room. There are better ways to deal with people that need health care than this massive new program.”

No one except the 49 million who don’t have insurance and therefore do not have access to regular health care. The best they can hope for is to wait until their health deteriorates to the point where they require emergency services. How wonderful.

Tell me again how the U.S. has the best health care system in the world…a system that allows thousands of its citizens to die needlessly each year because they are unable to afford health insurance…a system that has allowed medical costs to become one of the leading causes of personal bankruptcy…a system which has the U.S standing out as the only developed country in the world without a universal health care plan for its citizens.

Disgraceful.

I can think of no better reason to ensure that as few as possible of these sadistic conservative pricks win back office in 2014. If ever there existed a political party that deserves to be wiped off the electoral map, its the soulless, backward thinking, ignorant and heartless Republican Party.

It really takes no effort to hate their guts and everything they stand for.
