According to the MSNBC host, McKeown asked Maddow to collaborate on a new song for a Gulf Coast Wildlife benefit they were both attending. Maddow wanted to talk about “the experience [she] had in Louisiana covering the Deepwater Horizon disaster,” and text McKeown her thoughts. The musician texted back poetry and “a song was born.” Maddow went on to say that she’d never had an experience like it and she felt as if she “won the music fan lottery.”
