Ad Hoc Issue 1 Is Now Available

Ad Hoc Issue 1 Is Now Available

The first issue of Ad Hoc's quarterly print zine is now available! In contrast to our more stream-oriented daily content for the site, the pieces collected for our first print zine are longer, deeper features dedicated to the extra-musical facets of DIY culture. Included are interviews with Animal Collective, Bjorn Copeland of Black Dice, Franco Falsini of Sensations' Fix, Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum, The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, and V. Vale of Re/Search Publications and seminal punk fanzine Search & Destroy, among other pieces. You can read more about it and order a physical or digital copy from the merch section of our bandcamp page.

For those of you in the NYC area, we'll have some Ad Hoc zines unveiled and available tonight at 285 Kent during Silent Drape Runners' Lil' B Discussion Panel featuring Pictureplane, Kitty Pryde, Alexandra Gamlin of Afro-Punk, and SDR themselves as panelists.

PC Worship: Beat Punk

PC Worship: Beat Punk

PC Worship is releasing a new full-length, Beat Punk on Matt Mondanile's (Ducktails) record label, New Images. So far we have two cuts from the record, "Born In My Shell" and "Back In Time", both meandering mutant soul ditties, dementedly wandering through grunge, punk, and free jazz. Justin Frye breeds PC Worship from his Brooklyn loft, Le Wallet, but he is emerging from that space to go on a tour of the U.S. this February (tour poster with dates after the jump).

Beat Punk is out March 1st on New Images.

Great Valley: "Dream Phone"

Great Valley:

The Great Valley are pretend pop dreamsters from Brattleboro, VT (home of Blanche Blanche Blanche, who share a drummer with the Valley) who have done splits with Prince Rama and Happy Jawbone. They are planning to release their third full-length, Continental Lunch, on Feeding Tube Records, which features keyboard contributions by Zach Phillips of the aforementioned Blanche Blanche Blanche. "Dream Phone" starts with the sound of a telephone ringing and proceeds to fly away on huffs of helium.

Continental Lunch is out February 1st on Feeding Tube Records.

Julian Malone: "Give A Eff"

Julian Malone:

Even with all the attention it's Drill scene is getting, Chicago hip-hop is somewhat an unsung mecca of dope posses. Case in point: BRKF$T CLUB's "The Fellowship", which drives a widescreen, choral beat produced by Sani and Malone himself while the MCs (Julian Malone, U.G., Johnny St. Cloud, Fonz-E Mak, Calez, and LEGIT) trade rhymes rapidly with perfect chemistry and symmetry.

The breakout star of the team (2008ighties), however, is Julian Malone, who, compared to the rest of his crew, takes the most forward-thinking, lazer-guided approach to the mic while producing most of his own material to boot. "Give a Eff" is taken from his forthcoming debut on Stones Throw, which takes a Jeremiah Jae meets Prince Paul approach to hip-hop: blunted, psychedelic drums and samples with lyrical acrobatics that are more lean than mean.

Diff.Rnt is due out soon on Stones Throw.

Cold Lovers: "Keep Talking"

Cold Lovers:

Earlier this morning, Chicago's Cold Lovers put up three new tracks on their website in the form of the Unreleased 7". The second track, "Keep Talking" is in the vein of the band's earlier demo, with chaotic single-note lead guitar and vocals that drive like a bulldozer, three minutes of the kind of hardcore cacophony that's not commonly seen. It's also a pleasure to see the band is continuing their trend of cat-themed album art.

Here's hoping we can see a full-length from these guys in 2013, for now grab the Unreleased 7" over at their Bandcamp.

Matmos: The Marriage of True Minds

Matmos: The Marriage of True Minds

Expanding upon the premise of their Ganzfeld EP, Baltimore electronic duo Matmos are releasing their first full-length in five years, The Marriage of True Minds, on Thrill Jockey. Matmos are masters of making found sources danceable (2001's A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure consists primarily of sound samples of medical procedures) and The Marriage of True Minds continues that tradition while incorporating doom metal, tap dancing, and the Arditti String Quartet. As with The Ganzfeld EP, the songs on The Marriage of True Minds are made up of the telepathic communications between Matmos members Drew Daniel and Martin Schmidt, featuring a variety of collaborators. Matmos is going on tour to support the new record, see the dates after the jump.

The Marriage of True Minds is available February 22 on Thrill Jockey.

The Brotherhood of Lizards: "The Happening Guy"

The Brotherhood of Lizards:

The Brotherhood of Lizards was a project of Martin Newell, the main songwriter behind Cleaners from Venus. Both bands recorded and released most of their music through self-dubbed, limited runs of cassettes, and original copies are now quite hard to find. Luckily, Fullerton, California's Burger Records are re-releasing the 1989 cassette Lizardland, featuring "The Happening Guy". Newell, who is often compared to Ray Davis and Syd Barrett, is a master of the eccentric pop hook, and this delightfully strange number is testament to that.

Lizardland is available tomorrow on Burger Records.

Leapling: Losing Face

Leapling: Losing Face

The opener for Leapling's new EP Losing Face, "Nature Must Not Win", is almost a red herring. While the majority of the EP is tight and concise, a la The American Analog Set or local movers Total Slacker abound-- "Nature Must Not Win" is expansive and lived-in, a six-minute krautish groover that isn't afraid to take synth breaks between verses. It's a smart move on Leapling's part: the song gradually lets each member of the band come in one by one, setting the scene before more pop-leaning tracks like "If You're Patient" and "June" seal the deal. Leapling has a long history in Brooklyn's DIY scene, as the members hail from Big Snow Buffalo Lodge and recording collective American Buffalo. Despite their newness as a quartet, Leapling's already been sharing stages with Ava Luna, Each Other, and Twin Sister.

Losing Face is out now on Father/Daughter Records, and is available digitally or on vinyl. The vinyl pressing is only limited to 500 copies, with 100 of those available on bone-colored vinyl.

Tom Morgan: "One True Love"

Tom Morgan:

Tom Morgan, known for his contributions to Smudge and the Lemonheads, is releasing a solo album, Orange Syringe, on Fire Records. "One True Love", taken from the forthcoming release, is composed largely of layered acoustic guitar lines, but the stripped down musicality only serves to better highlight Morgan's lyrics, full of allusions to Shakespeare and tongue-in-cheek witticisms.

Orange Syringe is out February 5th on Fire Records.

Slava: Live at Mutual Dreaming

Slava: Live at Mutual Dreaming

Has it really been a year since Slava released Soft Control? The enigmatic Brooklyn-based producer has still managed to keep himself busy, even with an absense of new material. This thirty minute set is taken from Mutual Dreaming's Future Times party last April, where he performed live alongside Beautiful Swimmers and Protect-U. The set shows off just how great this dude is live as he gleefully rips into unreleased material, trapped out R&B flips, and of course, 2012 highlight "I've Got Feelings Too."

Soft Control is out now on Software.
