U.S. Marine vs. an IED. The Marine Wins

Via: Marines.Mil ]

SOUTHERN SHORSURAK, Afghanistan — Cpl. Matt Garst should be dead.

Few people survive stepping on an improvised explosive device. Even fewer walk away the same day after directly absorbing the force of the blast, but Garst did just that.

A squad leader with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Garst was leading his squad on a patrol in Southern Shorsurak, Afghanistan, June 23 to establish a vehicle checkpoint in support of Operation New Dawn.

The men were four miles from Lima Company’s newly established observation post when they approached an abandoned compound close to where they needed to set up their checkpoint. It would serve well as an operating base — a place for the squad to set up communications and rotate Marines in and out of. But first, it had to be secured.

Helen Thomas Recipe for ‘Palestinian Chicken’ Discovered

Via: Romenesko ]

Jean Tweet found a copy of “Second Helping” — a 1962 collection of recipes put together by the Womens National Press Club — just a week after Helen Thomas made news by stating Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine.” Tweet, who picked up the book for a quarter, says “it looks like a good recipe, too.” (It calls for two chickens, cut in half, swaddled in a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and spices and roasted for about an hour.)

. . . It does sound good, but I prefer to refer to it by it’s correct name, “Israeli chicken.” — GP

Panic: Independent Voters Abandoning Obama

Via: Top of the Ticket ]

Two new polls this morning augur ill for President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats who control Congress.

The worst — from Gallup — finds that for the first time since Obama took the oath, his support among independents, a key voter segment in his decisive 2008 coalition election win, has fallen below 40%. The new tracking finds that Obama’s support among all voter segments has declined in the past year, but nowhere more than among independents.

Only 38% now support him, an 18-point drop from 52 weeks ago, when polls first began showing independents peeling off as Obama relentlessly pushed his healthcare plan, ignoring polls saying jobs and the economy were uppermost on voters’ minds

10 Russian Spies to Plead Guilty; Spy Swap Underway

Via: Washington Post ]

All 10 of the accused Russian spies held in the United States pleaded guilty Thursday at a hearing in Manhattan, a key step in a reported deal under negotiation with Russia for the largest swap of espionage detainees since the Cold War. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz said at the start of the hearing in federal court that the 10 defendants wanted to enter guilty pleas. An 11th person indicted in the case is a fugitive.

Prosecutors agreed to allow the 10 to plead guilty to one charge each of secretly conspiring to act as agents of the Russian government, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of five years. Nine of the 11 defendants in the case were also originally charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Finally! A Sperm and Egg Bank For People Who Want Beautiful Babies

Via: ABC News ]

If you want to be a parent, Parissa Mobasher believes you owe your offspring three things: love, the best education you can provide and good genes. That’s why, as a member of BeautifulPeople.com, a dating site exclusively for attractive people, she’s joined the company’s most recent venture, a “virtual sperm and egg bank for people who want to have beautiful babies.”

“I know it sounds really shallow in the context of BeautifulPeople, but if you look at human nature, the initial attraction is the exterior,” the 42-year-old Londoner said. “It’s that extra edge in life.”

As a single woman, she said she’s potentially open to finding a suitable sperm donor on what the company called its fertility introduction service. And if she chooses against having children of her own, Mobasher said she’d seriously consider giving her eggs to someone else — especially given the strength of her own genetic endowment.

Science: Childhood Obesity Tied to Overeating, Not Lack of Excercise

Via: Telegraph ]

Debates have been raging in the scientific communities about whether lack physical activity or poor diet is the greater cause of obesity.

Now a controversial study has found for the first time that children who are obese do less exercise because they are already overweight. The findings suggest that junk food and overfeeding from an early age is responsible for childhood obesity rather than children increasingly staying inside to watch TV and play video games.

. . . What makes this study controversial? Maybe nobody wants to say it, but what this study shows is that it’s the parents who are at fault, not some lack of government funded exercise. — GP

Panic in Calif. – Part II: Field Poll has Boxer Up by Only 3% on Fiorina

Via: Field Poll ]

Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer is clinging to a narrow three-point lead (47% to 44%) over her Republican opponent, businesswoman Carly Fiorina, among likely voters in California’s upcoming November general election for U.S. Senate.
Over the past sixteen months The Field Poll has conducted five statewide surveys pairing Boxer and Fiorina in the Senate contest. The results show that Boxer’s once sizeable thirty-point advantage over Fiorina in March of last year has narrowed considerably in recent months.
Since January of this year the image that voters have of Boxer has become more negative. More voters now hold an unfavorable (52%) than favorable (41%) view of her. Also, appraisals of the job Boxer is doing have declined and are now close to the lowest ratings she has received in her eighteen-year tenure. At present, 43% of the state’s registered voters disapprove of the Senator’s performance, while 42% approve. Among likely voters 48% disapprove and 42% approve.

Panic in Calif. – Part I: Field Poll Calls Governor’s Race a Tie

Via: Field Poll ]

With the California gubernatorial general election formally underway, a new Field Poll finds
Democrat Jerry Brown holding a statistically insignificant one-point lead – 44% to 43% – over
Republican Meg Whitman in this state’s upcoming November election.
The closeness of the race is also reflected in the nearly equivalent, mixed image ratings that voters
give to the two gubernatorial candidates. About four in ten likely voters now hold positive
impressions of each candidate, while about four in ten others hold negative views. The current
findings represent a further sag in voter attitudes toward Brown, who possessed a two-to-one
favorable image with voters last year.

. . . Fingers crossed. — GP

Tim Tebow Leads in NFL Jersey Sales

Via: NBC Sports ]

For all of our friends in Jacksonville who continue to insist that drafting quarterback Tim Tebow wouldn’t have helped cement the Jaguars in place for the next decade or longer, here’s the ultimate rebuttal.

Darren Rovell of CNBC reports that the league leader in jersey sales made through NFLShop.com for the period of April 1 through June 30 is none other than Mr. Tebow. And that’s not just among rookies — it’s among all NFL players.

Considering that he wasn’t even on any NFL team for a third of the reporting period, it shows that Tebow brings to the table the kind of entry-level marketing punch not seen since Reggie Bush was taken No. 2 overall in 2006.

Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb finished at No. 2, followed by Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, and Vikings quarterback Brett Favre (who still hasn’t committed to playing in 2010) finished at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6, respectively.

. . . Personally, I think he’ll be good in the NFL as a player, but this is an interesting stat as he’s the anti-Vick in terms of player personality and that’s popular with the fans. — GP
