- On the Hurricane Sandy disaster relief bill:
I had serious concerns over the way it was put together, the biggest being none of the funding was offset. In 2005, more than $34 billion in appropriations for Hurricane Katrina relief was offset by spending reductions in other government programs, including defense. And it was done in a huge bipartisan way. I voted for it, and it passed with the support of 202 Republicans and 106 Democrats.
There were many trying to use this bill as a way to increase spending. The most glaring case of this is the transportation funding and the Community Development Block Grant funding in the Sandy bill are not limited to areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. - On the fiscal cliff deal, I was strongly in favor of the tax cut provisions and had voted for them on several occasions; however, because this bill, the way it was written, will add almost $4 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years, I just could not vote for it.
In addition, it was filled with several goodies for special interest groups, including money for rum producers, movie and television companies, NASCAR, and even algae growers. - ActivityJanuaryPeople Who Like This101
