Washington, Dec 20, 2012 -

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (HI-02) released the following statement on the House Majority's reluctance to compromise in order to avoid the "Fiscal Cliff":

“It is frustrating that the House Majority has decided to waste precious time focusing on trying to pass legislation exclusively using Republican votes, when what we need is bipartisan compromise.

“With the holidays fast approaching, the American people deserve better than the repackaged partisan bills that the Majority is trying to re-gift. The campaigning is over. It's time to govern. It's time to compromise with a balanced approach to reducing the deficit and increasing revenues.

“It is my hope that the Speaker will do what's right for the American people. He needs to gain the support of more than just the far right wing of his caucus. The Speaker must also work with President Obama to strike a deal that can earn bipartisan support in the House and Senate.

“As public servants, there's no better gift we can give the American people this year than an economy that's growing and creating jobs. Reaching a fair, balanced deal is vital to achieving this goal. I urge both parties to return to the bargaining table and get back to work."
