President signs bill establishing Liberty Memorial as home of World War I centennial commission

Updated: 2013-01-16T00:25:17Z

President Barack Obama has signed a bill creating a national commission to mark the centennial of World War I and anchoring it at Kansas City’s Liberty Memorial.

The legislation was approved by the Senate on Dec. 21 and by the House on Dec. 31. The president signed the bill Monday, according to the White House website.

The 12-member commission will meet initially and a least once a year at the Liberty Memorial, home to the National World War I Museum. Its members will be appointed by Congress and the White House, along with one member each to be named by the Liberty Memorial, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

The panel will coordinate events to commemorate the 1914-1918 war, which the United States entered in 1917.
