What should the 2012 Word of the Year be?

You may recall last year our editors selected an unusual, rare word, a tongue-twister of sorts as the 2011 Word of the Year. We picked tergiversate which means “to change repeatedly one’s attitude or opinions with respect to a cause, subject, etc.; equivocate.” We debated at length about whether to choose a newly relevant word, like Occupy or Arab Spring, but decided on a rare word that summed up the tone of the year. See our rationale behind picking tergiversate here.

To be honest, though, 2012 has been pretty boring when it comes to words. There wasn’t a tebowing or a pinking. Even the political campaigns were pretty boring. (Luckily, none of the candidates replicated Sarah Palin’s malapropism, refudiate.)

What word do you think we should pick as the 2012 Word of the Year? Do any words encompass the events and general sentiment of 2012?

I believe the word of the year should be SwagYOLO. It’s not really a word, but everyone uses it so much that it should be.

Christina E.Albersinowin on November 13, 2012 at 4:52 pm

I think the word of the year should be articulate, transliteration, Internationalization, or localization.

Christina E.Albersinowin on November 13, 2012 at 4:56 pm

Someone I know had us look up the word articulate, which means
1. uttered clearly in distinct syllables.
2. capable of speech; not speechless.
3. using language easily and fluently; having facility with words: an articulate speaker.
4. expressed, formulated, or presented with clarity and effectiveness: an articulate thought.
5. made clear, distinct, and precise in relation to other parts: an articulate form; an articulate shape; an articulate area.

I don’t really have that much of a big vocabulary, compared to last year’s word, but I think the word for 2012 should be “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” It should be that because there is no other word in my vocabulary to describe this. I don’t know what to say. Hehehe….

I think the word of the year should be pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. It is defined as being the lung disease obtained from breathing in silica dust, often found in miners and people standing too close to erupting volcanos. This word is 45 letters, and I think it is one of the best words in the english language.

The word “Expedient” comes to mind. It was the first word I could think of that seemed appropriate for all things in the year. Especially as we draw closer to the end of the Mayan calendar (while I hardly place any stock in the doom and gloom; the calendar simply ends) it seems the general theme is that some action in an “expedient” manner on all our part would be advisable. Indeed it seems we all have things to be done before the end of the year.

The word I choose is “end”.
This word is short and has a simple meaning, which means something that is a coming to a conclusion, a close.
When many people think of year 2012, we associate it with the movie “2012″, which predicts that the world will end this year, thus this is how the word “end” is related to the year 2012. However, looking in a new light, there is a saying “Every end is a new beginning”. Year 2012 may be an “end”, but it is also a new beginning for us to start the year 2013 afresh, with less negative thoughts about the world ending.

I don’t understand. First you point out that 2012 was pretty “boring” when it came to words,” and then you say that “luckily” no candidate alleviated this verbal ennui by following in Palin’s footsteps and coining a new word.

The 2012 word of the year should be “47-percenter,” defined as a layabout who expects government assistance.

Nadine on November 14, 2012 at 5:57 am

I believe it should be “overcome”. It’s not a word whose use would necessarily improve anyone’s vocabulary, but this year our world has been through quite a bit, most of which we have in some form or fashion, partially or wholly, “overcome”.

Bubba on November 14, 2012 at 10:12 am

I think that the Iconic word for 2012 is…(wait for it)… ICONIC ! The most thoroughly, completely, and utterly overused word of the year. Watch any Newscast on any Network and you will hear it used at least twice, if not three or more times. This adjective has become devalued and lost most of the weight it once had. Now I call THAT inflation! One would think that the Media Pundits could COIN a few alternative words and thus preserve the worth of something that truly deserves its stature as an Icon!

Howard Ryan on November 14, 2012 at 12:30 pm

I would be honored to see my choice for word of the year chosen, although I feel that my reasoning may be a bit to divisive for your website. My nomination for word of the year is “Liberal”. I nominate this word during an election year because of how tiring it is to hear the word misused constantly. The political bastardization of the word doesn’t match its actual meaning. To be liberal is by definition to be progressive towards reform and change. None of the various implied negative campaign meanings are found in a dictionary but they seem to be a part of the nomenclature of common understanding for the word amongst most of the country. Which is a shame, because the negative label is just a political construct; one that helps to keep our nation divided.

I think the word for 2012 should be:

pulchritudinous

This is basically another word for beautiful!

2012 was beautiful because

of the warm summer days,
the cool evenings,
the long winter nights
of the rain pounding the Earth every now and then
of the fall trees’ swaging braches as leaves fell off,
and the animals that will enlighten us forever!

Also…

Natural Life

Miranda A.

Take a moment to notice
The beauty of the trees.
Sit and take a look
At the dancing leaves.
Note the little child
Laughing, playing with a toy.
Always so full of energy;
Humongous amounts of joy.
Don’t crush the insects,
Who are 1/1000ths of your weight.
They may creep up your path,
But don’t decide their fate.
Life’s not about avoiding storms.
Instead, dance in the rain.
The Earth is so beautiful;
Why must we cause it’s pain?
Take time off your busy schedule
To glance at the starry night.
Because nature is genius.
So pretty, such a sight!

The word that surfaced over and over in 2012 was ” Seriously ?”
Commonly used as an outcry when observing something that you disagree with.
Example:
News Reporter, “Congress is going to take a 6 month vacation even though there is an impending zombie apocalypse”

Observer, “SERIOUSLY !?….SERIOUSLY???”
alternately the word “REALLY ?” is used multiple times.

In my opinion, 2012 wold be ‘bezoar’, but that doesn’t sound very pleasant, in fact, sort of gross.
My vote is ‘octagon’. It’s all I can do.

I’ve got quite a simple word. It’s not rare, unusual, nor does it twist your tongue. I nominate the word “next.” As I would like this next year to come in a more rapid fashion…

If not I also enjoy these words: Vanquish, Acquire, Conquer, and Vantage. Likewise, they are neither rare, unusual, and do not twist your tongue. However, they are very powerful and inspiring words.

MWpelzner on November 15, 2012 at 7:00 am

The word of the year should be “polarized.” I cannot remember a more polarized national situation than this past year. Politics were polarized on issues of pecuniary spending. The nation was polarized in its choice for politicians. People were polarized on their support of gay marriage, immigration, defense spending, etc. It has been a year of division, stark and polarized division.

Jeff on November 15, 2012 at 7:00 am

Do you know what would in keeping with 2012? Let us the readers vote on the word. The editors can give us 4-10 choices and let us pick. Most votes wins – that’s democracy. Is there a better word for it? Unless you want to establish an electoral college…

Amanda Farrow on November 15, 2012 at 9:24 am

I think the word should be destitution, dispossesion or deprivation.
Think of the world we live in. Every country there is a form of destitution. The way of the world lately is to deprive others for the success of themselves. And dispossesion goes hand in hand with destitution and deprivation. We are led to destitution by dispossession. Dispossession usually occures with deprivation. Maybe the bank will not give you a loan or a friend is too “broke” to lend a hand financially. I feel these words are the most realistic for this year.

I nominate “double down.” I know that technically it is TWO words, but I heard this figure of speech so often in political news stories that I think it really summarizes the year.

The term originated in the casino game of Blackjack (look it up if you don’t know it). In politics it refers to a situation where somebody makes a controversial or factually incorrect statement. When they are criticized, instead of backing off and/or apologizing, they don’t merely stand behind it, but instead they strengthen or expand their position.

It happened countless times during the campaign season at all levels, and usually was called out by the media. After all, that’s part of their job.

Agust on November 15, 2012 at 11:48 am

During the week leading up to Sandy the term “Frankenstorm” was bandied about, and is till think its a good word. But since then pretty much every media outlet has taken to using the term “superstorm” Sandy.

Superstorm seems like a fitting term to describe the year with politics and the aftermath and the storms and their aftermath.

I think it should either be pulchritudinous because how America is coming back out of the recession and to its former glory, or ironic. It’s ironic that President Obama won again. Or humdrum since it was a boring year. Or enigmatic. That always sounds like a cool word.

Or fiscal for the fiscal cliff or agumental since congress can’t agree on how to handle the fiscal cliff yet.

Trending. It’s the hottest word, at least among TV newscasters, this year. Depending on the topic, the talking heads keep telling us we’re either trending up or trending down, trending here or trending there, trending forward, trending toward, trending ahead, etc. Seems we’re always trending in a state of flux, never quite reaching “closure” (another hot/overused word).

2) India saw its people coming together under the leadership of Kejriwal to challenge the prevalent corruption.

If Yolo becomes the word of the year I am quitting this language once and for all, it is true that common usage of any combination of letters that is incorporated into the vernacular should be deemed as a word, but all falls flat if we can no longer discern between an acronym and a word.

Leah S. on November 16, 2012 at 6:57 pm

Defenestrate: to throw something or someone out of a window.

Defenestrate should be the word of the year because no matter who you are, liberal or conservative, rich or poor, you were probably extremely frustrated at some point in the duration of this year, and wanted to throw something (or some one) out of a window.

Jill on November 16, 2012 at 7:06 pm

I think the word of the year should be something that none of us at the time knew we even needed to know before all of this political stuff came to the front of the class so to speak and caught all of our attention. The word is actually two words that make up one. Debt Ceiling. Something that for years we heard and never paid attention to because we thought it didn’t pertain to us until one man got up there and told us what it was that was being talked about over all of the American peoples head who didn’t even realize it was something that we should be aware of.

Castrophony. (Despite the ostensible derivation it has nothing to do with either Castro or phones; it’s a portmanteau of catastrophe and cacophony, which I think is very appropriate for this year– lots of people shouting about terrible things going to happen and not a whole lot actually going on.)
Failing that: microcosm, sesquipedalia, perspicacity, or gloaming.

Considering how many thousand words there are in the English language, it is rather difficult to choose which one should win. If it doesn’t really have to reflect what happened this year, and if it has to be rarely used in the U.S., I’d pick “aluminium”. Americans use “aluminum”, but the rest of the world, as far as I know, uses the -ium ending to follow the pattern of “sodium (natrium)”, “potassium (kalium)”, “radium”, “uranium”, “bohrium”, etc.

Epicenter… Because the chaos, mega information and lack thereof, and the upheaval and it’s increased frequency , like a woman in labor pains ready to give birth, is honing in to an event which has great significance for us all, wonderful for some, fearful and dreadful for others, those looking forward to the promised event,”birth”, are full of Hope and expectation, Those who have not wisely reconciled their lives/debts are fearful and looking for somewhere/one to blame and to hide their many compromises and self-deceptions so they must cover their tracks with an alternate non truth & try to abort the Truth. But Truth is powerful simply because it’s reality and those trying to destroy it only harm themselves…it’s like saying there is no cliff when there is and they continue to move forward over the cliff all the while denying it’s happening.

I vote for YOLO. The phrase “you only live once” has been around forever, but young people are really using “yolo” a lot. I have a 21 year old son, and he and his friends seem to live by “yolo.” This generation of young adults does not seem to feel that the traditional American Dream will ever be in their grasp, so they are more hedonistic than previous generations. That is a bit disturbing to me, but on the other hand, they do what makes them happy, so they do seem to be happy with their lives.

I live in Colorado and was evacuated from the Waldo Canyon Fire. For us, the word INFERNO perfectly describes the year. Not just the blazes that destroyed our neighborhood, but also the overall climate of the country….

Massive heat waves across the nation, the fires in so many states (including the fires resulting from Sandy), and the general attitude in one of the hottest presidential races in our history…..the anger that arose from that….. yes, to me, INFERNO perfectly describes the year 2012.

Hi to all! The word of the year, heard every day in national news and now all over town, is “WHEELHOUSE.” (I don’t know exactly who started it…just that everyone was using it, suddenly, and still is.) It seems like it was spoken by someone influential (during the Presidential campaigns; perhaps by a campaign manager or even the President!) “Wheelhouse” then took off like a F1 car at LeMans. Not the sexiest word, true. However, I think it was so present on the national scene and then quickly entered everyday American vernacular. Isn’t that partly grounds for being named “Word of the Year?” Additionally, I am thinking that “wheelhouse” is the “Word of the Year” due to these factors: it was actually old and staid – but now wildly trendy (and that is so interesting! Fascinating, really.) The word “wheelhouse” made such an impact. It became influential. It spread from the White House to all of our houses. It is currently used by people in every walk of life, in different environments and scenarios. “Wheelhouse” is a buzzword that cropped up suddenly but seems to have real staying power. To me, “wheelhouse” IS the phenom of 2012. I believe there is no contest, really. (Pick me, pick me! :) ) Thank you all! This is a cool contest and was fun to enter. (I love Dictionary.com btw. You are my home page.) All the best, Kris Bass Malloy

Surely the word of the year should be “Jubilympics”? How many times does the combination of the Queen’s Jubilee and the London Olympics occur in the same year? If a year is going to be defined in one word then Jubilympics has to be it.

DDDictionary on November 19, 2012 at 5:48 am

yes i believe fritter is the ideal word to describe the state of the union as well as the state of the global community. We are terribly lacking in fritters at the moment, and this is creating negative unforseen consequences on our global politics and economy, notably seen in the rising inequality over the past decade. If the United States encouraged frittering, many of our poverty and inequality problems would be solved, and we would be a positive role model for the world to follow. Fritters have so much untapped potential, it is time for the world to realize this.

I believe that the 2012 Word of the Year should be Aladeen. Aladeen, from the movie, “The Dictator” is anything and everything. Aladeen means good and bad, happy and sad, and even love and hate. To say, “The government is very aladeen,” could mean that the government is great or terrible. Aladeen is the perfect word to sum up the entire 2012 year.

I believe that the word of the year should be, President, and or elections. Not only did we have people debating on social networking sites about who’d be a better president. We did have elections. The battle between Romney and Obama was very exciting. I was on my toes the whole time, and I heard president a lot over the past year. The buzz about this election year was pretty high. So my thoughts on the word of the year would be President.

( P.S. I am very happy with Obama being president. )

My choice of Word of the Year (2012) : “cliff-hanger”= n. 1. a situation of great suspense occurring usually at the end of a chapter in a book, scene in a film, or episode in a serial. 2. a serial in which each episode ends in suspense. 3. a situation, as in a competition or election, in which the outcome is uncertain until the very end. Coin one–”MAYASMA ATTACK…!”

We had some special events this year–

1. NASA’s Thor’s Day 12-20-2012 Asteroid Strike Day–Bring your own hammer, (NASA is ‘different’ that way)…

2. And NASA Mars just got ‘popadopulated’–(See my youtube video of Mars Zoo–30 images of geologically recent fish, eels, reptiles and mammals, dinosaurs and humans…);

3. And NASA went “Johnson Style”–(another youtube take on Psy’s “Gangnam Style”)…

So–2012 was a tie between Gangnam Style, and NASA…
