About Secretary of State Linda McCulloch

Throughout her career Linda McCulloch has been an energetic and determined advocate for all Montanans – having served as a teacher, school librarian, Legislator, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Her commitment to public service began before she was old enough to vote.

Elected Montana's first woman Secretary of State in November 2008, Linda is committed to ensuring that our state’s elections are fair, open, accurate, and accessible for all Montanans. Linda also believes that the Secretary of State must work with Montana’s businesses to help them grow and expand in today’s changing economy.

Before becoming Secretary of State, Linda served eight years as Montana’s statewide elected Superintendent of Public Instruction. During that time, she helped boost funding for Montana schools, implement Indian Education for All, start Full-Time Kindergarten across the state, award honorary high school diplomas for war-veterans, launch the READ Montana! program, and help advance rural education advocacy regarding the federal No Child Left Behind law.

Linda holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Supervision of Library Media Programs from the University of Montana. She started her educational career in 1978 as a paraprofessional in Eastern Montana, then teaching in schools in Western Montana.

Linda served three terms in the Montana House of Representatives, from 1995 to 2001. As a Legislator, she served on the Judiciary, Highways & Transportation, Local Government, Education and House Rules Committees. Interim Committee assignments included Juvenile Justice & Mental Health, Indian Affairs, and Education & Local Government. In 1999, she served as the Minority Caucus Leader and Vice-Chair of the House Education Committee. From 1995 to 2000, Linda McCulloch was a Faculty Affiliate at the University of Montana and a recipient of the Mike and Maureen Mansfield Library Scholarship. For the past eight years, she served on the Board of Public Education, Board of Regents, Montana Library Commission and the State Land Board as the Superintendent of Public Instruction. She will continue to serve on the Land Board as Secretary of State.

As an active civic leader, Linda has also served as a board member for the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, the MT Heritage Project, the Montana Professional Teaching Foundation and served on the Advisory Council to the Montana Meth Project.

Linda McCulloch was born December 21, 1954. She has been married to Bill McCulloch since 1978.
