Congressman Flake Disappointed in UN Vote to Upgrade Palestinian Authority Status to Non-Member Observer State

Efforts Should be Focused on Peace Process, Not Statehood

Washington, D.C., Nov 29, 2012 -

Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona’s Sixth District, today voiced disappointment in the vote taken by the UN General Assembly to elevate the status of the Palestinian Authority to non-member observer state:

“This end-run around negotiations by the Palestinian Authority is counterproductive,” said Flake. “The only path to longstanding peace is through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.”

In addition to other legislation, for the past three Congresses, Congressman Flake has cosponsored the United Nations Transparency, Accountability, and Reform Act, the current version of which (H.R. 2829) would, among other things, withhold funds to any UN entities that upgrade the status of the Palestinian observer mission at the UN prior to a final peace agreement negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians. Additionally, Congressman Flake voted for H. Res. 268 in July, 2011, affirming Congressional support for direct Israeli-Palestinian negations to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
