Congressman Flake: So Just How Broke Are We?

Mesa, Arizona, Sep 4 - Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona’s Sixth District, today illustrated the size and scope of the growing national debt.

Andy Roddick, one of the all-time winningest United States tennis players, will retire after this year’s U.S. Open with 32 career singles titles (as of this publishing) and more than $20.5 million in prize money.

The U.S. is so broke that based on the $1.9 million in prize money that will be awarded to the singles winner of the 2012 U.S. Open, Andy Roddick would have to win roughly 8.4 million U.S. Open titles in order to pay down our massive debt, which will cross the $16 trillion mark today.

“We need a Grand Slam of a plan to ace the debt,” said Flake.

Along with Senators McCain and Rubio, Congressman Flake introduced in the 112th Congress the Debt Buy-Down Act, which allows taxpayers to designate up to 10 percent of their federal income tax liability to reduce the national debt.  The bill then requires Congress to reduce federal spending by that amount.  More information on the Debt Buy-Down Act can be found here.
