The South Brevard Historical Society was founded in 1966 to bring together citizens interested in the history of Florida and especially South Brevard County. The Society’s purpose is to provide the community with the means to draw strength and perspective from the past, realize a sense of regional identity, and find direction for the future, thus enhancing the quality of life and vitalizing the communities of South Brevard.
The Society has met continuously and continues to provide programs and activities to educate members and the general public. We hold monthly general meetings the 2nd Saturday of the month from September through June. Members and guests have an opportunity to share ideas and information. The public is always invited to attend. The Society publishes ten newsletters a year to inform members of upcoming programs and news of the Society as well as information about new history publications, other history organizations and news of general historic interest. These newsletters will be published online at this website as well.

Our January Program
Annual Business Meeting
A Presentation by Terry O’Toole, Park Services Specialist of the Sebastian Inlet State Park
and
Sandi Marino Volunteer Museum Guide Sebastian Fishing Museum
By the beginning of the Twentieth Century commercial fishing was playing a major role in the communities along the Indian River Lagoon. The opening of the railroad had expanded the market and opportunities to earn a living off the water. Sport fishing and tourism have played a major part as well.
Our program will explore the early fishing industry of the Sebastian area and how it helped make Sebastian what it is today. Much of our view will be through the stories of three of Sebastian’s earliest families that operated fish houses: Judah, Sembler and Smith.
If you are a fishing fan or a history buff, you’ll enjoy the “tales” of the Indian River Lagoon and families who are still part of our community.
The program will be preceded by a brief annual business meeting.
