By now there must be few people who are unaware of the recent uproar surrounding the University of California’s rebranding effort. Seldom does the media take such an active interest in design, so it was disheartening (to say the least) that they got their reporting so very, very wrong. The outcome of that misreporting—fueled by an online petition and fanned by our very own design community—has set back the course of design and cheated the University of California out of a progressive new identity.

This mentoring program in Jacksonville, Florida pairs high school students who have expressed an interest in graphic design with professionals from the local design community. Over the course of three to four months, the mentoring group meets on weekends to complete individual projects that use social design to give back to the community.

DesignEd K12 is AIGA’s initiative to encourage members and chapters to become involved with local schools and school districts to improve understanding of design practices among young people, and to encourage the use of these practices as problem-solving techniques.
NEW YORK—November 13, 2012. AIGA’s Design Leaders Confidence Index strengthened in the most recent quarter. For the third quarter of 2012, the index gained, climbing from 94.92 to 100.51, demonstrating continuing optimism within the design profession.
