About AFA

Education

AFA's breadth of services and programs, through our headquarters and our member organizations across the country, reflect the philosophy that individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses have the right to maintain their dignity, and that knowledge and support will ease the burden of this heartbreaking brain disorder on individuals with the disease and their families.

AFA provides the following services:

Nationwide toll-free hotline (866.AFA.8484). AFA's hotline provides information, counseling by licensed social workers and referrals to resources across the nation, including community organizations that offer hands-on support services.

  • AFA Web site (www.alzfdn.org). This site includes information about Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, caregiving strategies and behavioral issues, as well as daily news about Alzheimer's disease, and links to AFA member organizations and AFA divisions.
  • Comprehensive educational materials. These materials, available in English and other languages, address medical treatments, caregiving strategies, long-term planning, behavioral challenges, brain care, successful aging, and other dementia-related issues.
  • Conferences and workshops. Relevant to caregivers and/or professionals, they cover diagnosis and medical breakthroughs, financial and legal issues, caregiving strategies and other concerns.
  • National initiatives. AFA advocates for government funding for social services to support individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Annual events to raise awareness include the foundation's National Memory Screening Day (www.nationalmemoryscreening.org) and National Commemorative Candle Lighting (www.candlelighting.org), both of which are held in November. The AFA Quilt to Remember is the nation's first dementia-related quilt that will continually grow in size and travel the country to pay tribute to those affected by Alzheimer's disease.
  • Consumer publications. Designed specifically for caregivers of individuals with dementia, these include brochures and care ADvantageā„¢, a free quarterly magazine for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses.
