Looking Back at 2012
December 31, 2012

Dear Friends:

As we prepare for 2013, many of the last year’s challenges remain at the forefront of our minds.  The tragedy in Connecticut, the Hurricane that ravaged the Northeast, and the lives lost in Benghazi – these events have shaken our nation and demanded that we come together and pursue a better way forward.  While our communities are still reeling, we must remember that no act of violence - no moment of tragedy - will break the American spirit.  We always overcome our obstacles and meet our challenges.  This nation will emerge stronger.

As we look back at the last 12 months, there is also so much that we should celebrate.  Our economic recovery has continued throughout 2012.  The Supreme Court ensured that the milestone Affordable Care Act will continue to expand care and hold the insurance companies accountable.  And, of course, our city experienced great success through events like Super Bowl XLVI, the expansion of organizations such as Second Helpings, and the awarding of $28.5 million to Warren Township Schools.

As you gather in just a few hours to welcome in the New Year with family and friends, I wish you all the very best.  May the coming year bring prosperity and limitless possibilities for you and your family.

Sincerely,

André Carson
Member of Congress

A LOOK BACK AT 2012
“By halftime locals were talking about when, not if, the NFL would return to Indy with another Super Bowl, and based on the city’s stellar performance and its track record with other athletic organizations, I’d guess sooner rather than later.”

Army Ranger Cory Smith, who recently served as a member of the 3rd Battalion 7th Ranger Regiment in the Army, and completed two deployments in Afghanistan within nearly four years of service, has just accepted an invitation from Indiana Congressman Andre Carson. "All across our city, too many seniors - many of them on fixed incomes - hit hard times with nowhere to turn," said Congressman Carson. "These federal funds directly impact their standard of living by providing an affordable roof over their heads."

"Second Helpings stepped forward 14 years ago because they know this is a solvable problem, and they've done incredible work to meet the challenges facing this great city," said Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN).

Carson announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a $1.4 million grant to the City of Indianapolis, which will benefit the Damien Center, a local organization serving persons in Central Indiana who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

Congressman André Carson debuted the “Carson in Your Corner” video series to highlight constituent success stories in Indiana’s 7thCongressional District.  The video series will emphasize services available through contacting Carson’s Office and introduce viewers to those who have benefitted from reaching out for help.

A job fair sponsored by Congressman Andre Carson and Ivy Tech was worth the trip for one woman, who walked in, talked to a prospective employer, and was then hired on the spot.

Congressman André Carson zoned in on issues of higher education, introducing legislation that would clarify college employment placement statistics and announcing the creation of the Congressional Higher Education Caucus to encourage more intentional assessment of higher education challenges in America.

“When I think of coming together, when I think about the leadership and integrity it takes to strengthen our community, when I think of pushing aside our differences to do what’s right for the families that call this city home,” said Democrat U.S. Rep. André Carson. “I think of SenatorRichard Lugar.”
