Ice Cream Social

A Ride to Eddy's Sweet Shop

10:30am

18 ish miles / Moderate / Starting at Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park

Happy New Year.   Let's put those pesky resolutions to bed and go eat ice cream.  Yeah, we know its the middle of the winter, but for the true ice cream lover there is no right season to indulge our desires. Eddies Sweet Shop has been part of the Forest Hills community since 1909 - and the store is unchanged since the 1920's or 1930's.  They make their own ice cream, and generally do things the old fashioned way.  And, their malteds are just amazing.

Layer up, and join us as we ride to this Icon in Queens.  There will be no lunch stop on this ride - we are just gonna eat desert... more

20ish miles / Moderate / Starting at Van Cortlandt Park

This is an impromptu ride around the Bronx via the Bronx Greenways. We will start at 11am from Van Cortland and 242nd Street. This ride will take us, well, we're not 100% sure (it is after all an IMPROMPTU ride). But for those who must have some structure, we will be making a stop at the Bartow-Pell Mansion ($5.00 admission). From there we will continue along the greenway and head back to Riverdale where we will end our ride at the lunch spot: An Beal Bocht.

Dead Horse Bay

Bottle Beach

10:00am

25 miles / Moderate / Starting at Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park

One man's trash is another man's treasure.  Once upon a time, Barren Island was a vibrant community with schools, churches and even an airstrip.  The area was used as the final resting place for dead horses, glue factories, fish oil factories and of course a dump.  Then along came Robert Moses who removed the town, and joined the island to the mainland with fill.  Alas, the landfill cap busted, and to this day, ancient bottles continue to litter the beach. This is a remote area in Brooklyn and you feel that you are somewhere removed from NYC.  There is a destitute beauty.  Lunch will be... more

The Fireside Ride II

A Stay Warm Winter Adventure

10:00am

20 miles / Happy Face / Starting at Chelsea Piers

January just begs for a fireplace, wool socks, and a hot toddy -- did we say that already? Well, today is the day -- and -- lo and behold -- only a few days short of the Inauguration!

Come join is as we meander and stumble to Jamaica Estates in quest of Donald Trump's home hearth, his early schooling -- a humble red-brick schoolhouse -- and, depending on the temps, a jaunt out to Coney Island for a quick visit to Dad's Trump Village. Note: If we do not detour to Coney Island (and add an additional 15 miles), we'll stay snugly in Queens, and saunter down to -- as... more

Ramblersville in Winter

A Groundhog Day Ride

10:00am

32 miles / Moderate / Starting at Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park

Groundhog Day was only two days before, and by know we will definitely know whether Ol Man Winter will continue to reign.  Which can only mean that it is time for our annual cold weather ramble to Ramblersville.   The last three years had temps in the 20's - perfect for that iconic cold weather ride.  One of the most isolated neighborhoods in New York City, Ramblersville is a one block wide strip of land between Old Howard Beach and JFK.  Houses are built on stilts in this marshy spit of land.  We cross one of the most scenic foot bridges in NYC.  The squawks of the parrots will be the... more

A Ride to the Great Falls

In Paterson, New Jersey

9:30am

35 miles / Happy Face / Starting at George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal

Join us for our annual springtime semi-training scenic adventure to one of the --  truly -- East Coast wonders of the world, The Paterson Falls, and a tour of labor history at the turn of the century in this old "Silk City" mill town that was the inspiration for the American epic, Paterson, by poet W.C. Williams, and many many labor strikes. Today, as then, the Silk City is a town of immigrants, and after touring the falls and museums, we'll lunch at an authentic Peruvian family restaurant where the indigenous drink, chicha morada, flows from pitchers as red as wine.

New Jersey -- Coast to Coast II

Bordentown to Point Pleasant!

9:00am

46 miles / Moderate / Starting at Penn Station

This is our second attempt at an inaugural two-part 5BBC ride that traverses the length of New Jersey, from the tranquil Delaware River to the roiling Atlantic Ocean!

The ride begins in Trenton, NJ, and travels, via the Delaware tow path to historic Bordentown (home of Tom Paine). From there, we move into the interior -- back roads and old-style country diners and flea markets -- with lunch at Tootie's, a New Egypt institution (along with their spectacular one-of-a-kind ice cream sundaes), before heading out into the uncharted northern fringes of the Pine Barrens (a long stretch on... more
