Joplin's Peace Lutheran Church to break new ground Sunday
Peace Lutheran Church members will break ground for a new church at 2 p.m. Sunday at 3100 N. St. Louis Ave. The church’s previous building at 20th Street and Wisconsin Avenue was destroyed in the May 2011 tornado. “It is something we have truly looked forward to for so long,” said pastor Kathy Redpath. “It has been great to be taken in by another church, but it will be great to have a place to call our home again.”

Jane Cage, Joplin residents recognized for ‘resilience’
Jane Cage and the residents of Joplin have received the Rick Rescorla National Award for Resilience from Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano for helping Joplin recover from the May 22, 2011, tornado.

Jane Cage, community of Joplin honored for “resilience” by Homeland Security
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today announced that Jane Cage, chairperson of the Citizens Advisory Recovery Team in Joplin, along the citizens of Joplin, have been awarded the Rick Rescorla National Award for Resilience following the 2011 tornado.

Steel work under way at two Joplin school sites
The arrival of the new year should bring a flurry of work to the construction sites of Joplin’s newest schools. “We’re to that point now where things are really going to start popping,” said Mike Johnson, director of construction for the Joplin School District.

Harmony Heights Baptist Church to open doors for first Sunday service since 2011 tornado
The Harmony Heights Baptist Church building is new, but Charlie Burnett, who has served as pastor for 17 years, already feels like he belongs there. “There’s nothing like being in your own home,” he said.

Joplin homebuilder celebrates tax-credit project
Last year’s tornado nearly wiped out Red-Wood Development Co. That is one reason that turning the keys over Wednesday to the owner of a new home built by the company was a special occasion for both Red-Wood and the buyer, Tara Atherton.

Joplin school board tests furniture for new schools
As they prepare to furnish several new schools with desks, tables, chairs and other furniture, members of the Joplin Board of Education on Tuesday night got a lesson on ergonomically designed furniture from one of the manufacturers that the school district had scouted.

Commission recommends TIF district for Joplin
Only minutes after a deal was inked Friday to cover losses in tax revenue to the Joplin School District, the city’s Tax Increment Financing Commission agreed to recommend that the Joplin City Council approve an $806 million redevelopment proposal.
