WOLF COSPONSORS CRITICAL AUTISM RESEARCH
LEGISLATION PASSED BY THE HOUSE

Washington, D.C.  - Rep. Frank Wolf today announced that the House has passed a bill he cosponsored to reauthorize a nationwide autism screening program.

The Combating Autism Reauthorization Act would continue a program started in 2006 that funds a number of research programs devoted to improving the treatment for children and adults on the autism spectrum.  Without the extension, the provisions are set to sunset at the end of the current fiscal year.  The bill was approved by a voice vote and now moves to the Senate for action.

Wolf, a longtime advocate for autism research, said the legislation will help improve methods for screening autism, identify autism susceptibility genes, develop clinical guidelines and new treatments for medical conditions commonly associated with autism and build new interventions for children with autism.

The reauthorization measure continues the program with spending frozen at fiscal year 2011 levels and retains sunset and reporting provisions that ensure appropriate review and accountability.

"Autism affects one in every 110 children in America," said Wolf. "The original legislation has lead to significant advances in our understanding of the autism spectrum and I am hopeful that this bipartisan reauthorization will lead to even greater achievements in our understanding of autism."
