Healthy Environment & People

Brecksville High students participated in 2012 RiverSweep

Ohio and Erie Canalway Association coordinates RiverSweep, the largest river cleanup in Ohio, with over 2,000 volunteers and the removal of over 5 tons of trash and debris from the Cuyahoga River. In addition to conservation, recreation is an important focus of the Association's activities. Visit the 81 mile (and growing!) Towpath Trail.

Preservation & Education

The Rivers of Steel Heritage Corporation stabilized the Carrie Blast Furnace site, a National Historic Landmark, and offers tours and programs to highlight U.S. Steel site. Check out their Hard Hat Tour. The Corporation has also found creative ways to promote Pittsburgh's steel heritage, using industrial sites for the backdrop of performances, including Pyrotopia – a festival featuring performers, artists, artisans and educators displaying fire, light and electricity to over 3000 attendees.

Economic Development

Along with 15 state partners, South Carolina National Heritage Corridor provides marketing and capacity building opportunities for farmers within the heritage corridor. These activities are aimed at increasing economic activity associated with agricultural tourism.

Conservation & Sustainability


David Harris conducts oral history interviews with long-time Natchitoches residents Lee White and James Gay at the Dawn of Light Lodge, which was founded by African American Freemasons in the 1870s
Cane River National Heritage Area spearheaded the Natchitoches Parish African American Cultural Heritage Initiative (NPAACHI). This initiative supports a series of programs that promote sustainable usage of the area’s resources and impact the lives of community members in a fundamental way. Programs and projects include the African American Cultural Heritage Art Class, historical research to establish African American historic districts, and three community gardens that were placed within designated food deserts.
