Louise Glück, U.S. Poet Laureate, 2003-2004
Louise Glück,
U.S. Poet Laureate, 2003-04

On August 28, 2003, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced the appointment of Louise Glück to be the 12th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. On making the appointment, the Librarian said, "Louise Glück will bring to the Library of Congress a strong, vivid, deep poetic voice, accomplished in a series of book-length poetic cycles. Her prize-winning poetry and her great interest in young poets will enliven the Poet Laureate's office during the next year."

Glück served one term as poet laureate, finishing her duties on May 4, 2004. During her tenure, Glück named two new Witter Bynner Fellows, Dana Levin and Spencer Reece, and also brought the work of three poets, Peg Boyers, Dan Chiasson and Peter Streckfus, to the Library's audiences. These five poets appeared in the Library's literary series, read from their work and discussed the writing of poetry during a symposium presided over by Glück.
