H.Res. 77 being considered on the floor under suspension of the rules, requiring a two-thirds majority vote for passage. This legislation was introduced by Representative Robert Wittman (R-VA) on January 21, 2009.

H.Res. 77 resolves that the House of Representatives, "congratulates the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, for more than 100 years of leadership and service to the Fredericksburg area, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the United States."

In 1908, Virginia Governor Claude Swanson established the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Fredericksburg, Virginia. The school was renamed Mary Washington College in 1938, in honor of President George Washington's mother. In 1970, the college became co-ed and men were enrolled for the first time.

Now known was the University of Mary Washington, the school enrolls over 5,000 students and has over 1,000 faculty and staff. The public university offers 43 degree programs, and has 23 NCAA varsity sports teams. The University of Mary Washington celebrated its centennial during the 2007-08 academic year.
