USAA Distinguished Valor Matching Grant Program

Program Overview

In honor and recognition of our fallen soldiers and wounded warriors, Nevada State Treasurer Kate Marshall and the Nevada College Savings Board of Trustees, in partnership with USAA, have established the USAA Distinguished Valor Matching Grant Program to assist Nevada military families and their children attain their higher education goals.

The purpose of the USAA Distinguished Valor Matching Grant Program is to support the education goals of our U.S. military and their families who have either lost a parent or had a parent injured in action. Additionally, through our recent program expansion, children of active duty U.S. military also qualify.

Who's eligible?

There are two ways to qualify for the program

Category A

  • You or the beneficiary must be a Nevada resident.
  • The account owner must currently serve on active duty in the U.S. military, including the Active Reserves, Active Guard or Nevada National Guard.
  • The account owner must have an adjusted gross income (AGI) for his or her household of less than $75,000.
  • The designated beneficiary must be a child of the account owner and the child must be less than 13 years of age.

Category B

  • You or the beneficiary must be a Nevada resident.
  • You must be the account owner of a USAA 529 College Savings Plan account.
  • Immediate family members of a wounded warrior or fallen soldier.
  • Those awarded a Purple Heart in either Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom.

How does the matching grant work?

If you qualify and are approved for the program, contributions to your USAA College Savings Plan account will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to a lifetime maximum of $1,500.

How you apply

  • Download and complete a USAA Distinguished Valor Matching Grant Program Application.
  • Mail your application and required supporting documentation to the address listed on the application by December 15.
  • You will be notified by mail if your application is approved.
  • If approved, matching funds will be applied in January based on the previous year's contributions.

Important Dates

  • September. 1: Application process opens for Nevada residents.
  • December 15: Final date for applications to be postmarked for a particular given calendar year.
  • January: Matching funds are applied to your USAA 529 College Savings Plan Account the following January.

USAA Distinguished Valor Matching Grant Program1 funds are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Call 1-800-292-8825 to request a Plan Description and Participation Agreement containing this and other information about the Plan from USAA Investment Management Company, Underwriter and Distributor. Read it carefully before investing. If you or the beneficiary are not residents of the State of Nevada, consider before investing whether your or the beneficiary's home state offers a 529 plan that provides its taxpayers with state tax and other benefits not available through this Plan. Please consult your tax adviser.
