DEP COMMISSIONER TELLS NJAC BOARD ABOUT REFORMS

DEP Commissioner Mauriello (right) addresses the NJAC Board at its April meeting  NJAC President Carol Clark (Essex) and Past President Brett Radi (Somerset) receive briefing from DEP Commissioner  Commissioner Mauriello tells NJAC Board about efforts to streamling regulatory process

Sensitive to the frequent compliant by public officials that his agency moves too slowly to approve new projects, DEP Commissioner Mark Mauriello told NJAC Board members recently that he understands their concerns and that his staff is working hard to streamline the regulatory process.

"Our members were encouraged by much of what the Commissioner reported," said Celeste Carpiano, NJAC Executive Director.  "County officials in New Jersey understand the need to balance environmental protection with economic development.  The Commissioner clearly understands that need as well."

According to Mauriello, the DEP is working more cooperatively with local and county governments, builders and transportation officials to reduce the time and cost of complying with the state's environmental regulations.

"We've made a change in the culture of DEP," said the Commissioner, who explained that his staff is sensitive to the economic consequences of a slow-moving regulatory process.

Mauriello is the latest in a long string of cabinet officials to brief the NJAC Board, which meets periodically to discuss important issues by which county governments and property taxpayers are affected.
