Lamborn Protects Missile Defense Funding in Defense Authorization Act

Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) spoke out on the House Floor yesterday to help defeat a measure which would have slashed $403 million from the National Defense Authorization Act for missile defense funding.

Part of that money would help plan for a ground-based interceptor missile on the East Coast to protect against a missile attack by a rogue nation. Currently, the United States has ground-based interceptors in Alaska and on the West Coast.

From Lamborn's Floor remarks:

"This amendment would slash funding to start the process of putting ground-based interceptors on the East Coast. It doesn't happen overnight. It is a multi-year process and we must start planning now to defend the heavy population centers on the East Coast from inter-continental ballistic threats. There are rogue naitons that mean us harm. There's the possibility of an accidental launch by a number of countries. We have to have that type of defense."  Doug Lamborn (CO-05)

The proposed amendment failed on the House Floor by a vote of 165-252.

According to independent analysis conducted by the Institute for Defense Analysis, a ground-based interceptor is needed on the East Coast.

The Obama Administration has reduced funding for missile defense program for the past 3 years.
