Diane Paulus is the artistic director of the American Repertory Theatre (A.R.T.) at Harvard University. During her tenure at the A.R.T., she has directed The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which played on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre and won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical; Prometheus Bound, a new musical inspired by Aeschylus’s ancient Greek tragedy, written by Tony Award–winner Steven Sater (Spring Awakening) with music composed by Grammy Award–winning Serj Tankian; Tod Machover’s Death and The Powers: The Robots’ Opera, a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in music; The Donkey Show, a disco adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Best of Both Worlds; and Johnny Baseball. Paulus’s other recent work includes Cirque du Soleil’s newest creation, Amaluna, which had its world premiere in Montreal in April 2012, and the Public Theater’s Tony Award–winning revival of Hair on Broadway and London’s West End. As an opera director, her credits include The Magic Flute, Il mondo della luna, Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, and the Monteverdi trilogy. Paulus is a professor of the practice in theater in Harvard University’s Department of English and was one of Boston Magazine’s 50 Most Powerful Bostonians in 2012. She was awarded the 2012 Founders Award for Excellence in Directing from the Drama League.

John Tiffany RI ’11 developed the musical Once at the A.R.T. in 2011. The production played on Broadway, where it won eight 2012 Tony Awards—including Best Director—as well as Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. Tiffany is the associate director of the National Theatre of Scotland, where he created his production of Black Watch, which transferred to London and received the Laurence Olivier Award and Critics’ Circle Award for Best Director. Other international credits include The Missing, Peter Pan, The House of Bernarda Alba, Hunter, Be Near Me, Nobody Will Ever Forgive Us, The Bacchae, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn, and Home: Glasgow for the National Theatre of Scotland; Jerusalem for West Yorkshire Playhouse; Las Chicas del Tres y Media Floppies for Granero Theatre, Mexico City, and Edinburgh Festival Fringe; If Destroyed True, Mercury Fur, and The Straits for Paines Plough; and Gagarin Way, Abandonment, Among Unbroken Hearts, Perfect Days, and Passing Places for Traverse, Edinburgh. During his year as a Radcliffe fellow, Tiffany created I Speak, Therefore I Am with the A.R.T. Institute Class of 2011.
