Extended Benefits

The federal government has approved the return of the Extended Benefits (EB) program in New York State. New York State may now provide up to 20 weeks of EB benefits. However, the weeks of available benefits in Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) were reduced in Tier 1 and Tier 3. See the information below for details.

You can claim EB and EUC benefits the usual way.

Note: The federal EUC and EB programs are scheduled to end on December 30, 2012.  You will not be able to collect EUC or EB benefits after that date.

 

If you... Then you can...
Exhaust 26 weeks of regular UI benefits by 12/23/12 Collect EUC
Exhaust your current tier of EUC by 12/23/12 Move to the next tier
Exhaust all available weeks of EUC by 12/23/12  Collect EB 


EUC offers up to 53 weeks of benefits, in four tiers. All claimants may not qualify for every tier, or all 53 weeks, of EUC. Read on for details and key dates. Also see the breakdown of additional benefits chart.

 

Tier 1 - If you entered Tier 1 by 9/2/12, you may be eligible to receive up to 20 weeks. If you entered Tier 1 after 9/2/12, you may be eligible to receive up to 14 weeks. To qualify, you must:

  • Have filed an initial claim for regular benefits by 6/18/12
  • Exhaust 26 weeks of regular benefits by 12/23/12
  • Start claiming EUC by 12/30/12

If you claimed one or more partial weeks of benefits after your original claim began or you had a break in your claim, your exhaust date may fall after 12/23/12 and make you ineligible for EUC.

Tier 2 ( up to 14 weeks) - To qualify, you must:

  • Have filed an initial claim for regular benefits by 3/12/12
  • Exhaust all available weeks of Tier 1 EUC by 12/23/12

If you claimed one or more partial weeks of benefits after your original claim began or you had a break in your claim, your Tier 1 exhaust date may fall after 12/23/12 and make you ineligible for Tier 2.

Tier 3 If you exhausted Tier 2 by 9/2/12, you may be eligible to receive up to 13 weeks. If you exhausted Tier 2 after 9/2/12, you may be eligible to receive up to 9 weeks. To qualify, you must:

  • Have filed an initial claim for regular unemployment by 10/24/11
  • Exhaust all available weeks of Tier 2 EUC by 12/23/12

If you claimed one or more partial weeks of benefits after your original claim began or you had a break in your claim, your Tier 2 exhaust date may fall after 12/23/12 and make you ineligible for Tier 3.

Tier 4 (up to 6 weeks) -  To qualify, you must:

  • Have filed an initial claim for regular unemployment by 4/4/11
  • Have exhausted all available weeks of Tier 3 EUC by 9/2/12

Extended Benefits (EB)  (up to 20 weeks) - To qualify, you must have exhausted all available weeks of EUC by 12/23/12.
