       There is quite a point here. When you put gun control laws in place, do they honestly think the guns will listen? They know that it is a way to restrict a FREE man from protecting himself and his family and his nation. Violence ensues when the criminal understands that the law abiding people have been disarmed. It becomes their chaotic playground of murder and rape.

  5. Friends and family members of a beloved elderly couple, ages 81 and 80, are grieving after the West Michigan grandparents were found murdered on Saturday during what police say was a home invasion. Few details have been released at this time.
  6. Did you know southwest Texas has more snow on the ground than Grand Rapids? GR is 25 inches below normal for the season, and the Muskegon area is farthest in the state from its snowy average. Are you happy to be shoveling less or do you miss the snow?
  7. State officials say food assistance benefits will be restored to the vast majority of the 85,000 recipients and their families affected by an error related to Bridge Cards by Friday’s end. But not all recipients will have their food assistance benefits reloaded by Saturday morning – meaning they still won’t be able to use their cards at grocery stores or other locations.
  8. There has been lots of discussion on MLive about this topic as of late - a Grand Rapids attorney is suing a 71-year-old groundskeeper for negligence related to the sledding death of a boy in 2009. Debate continues over the justification of the suit.

  13. Gas prices set a new annual high for Michigan in 2012, and prices could spike to around $4/gallon again in 2013. Michigan motorists will continue to pay more due to high-than-average gas taxes. Boo.
  14. Cold today, huh? Well fear not. A thaw may be on the way for Michigan over the next couple weeks, with temperatures possibly in the 35 to 45 degree range.
  15. Michigan State Police say that on Monday, shortly before 5 p.m., troopers were summoned to the Mackinac Bridge on the report of someone jumping from the structure.

    Troopers found an empty vehicle parked north of mid-bridge, police said. A body has not been found despite a search by the Coast Guard.

    But a few stories gave us reason to hold on this year. Here are eight of them, and share your own news of the year, too:
  24. Paliani's Restaurant received national attention and underwent a full makeover -- from the decor to the menu -- when the Food Network show "Restaurant Impossible" came to visit over the summer. But it wasn't enough for the struggling eatery.
  25. Gov. Rick Snyder has signed a broad bill putting more regulations on abortion providers, while rejecting separate legislation related to Blue Cross Blue Shield because of abortion provisions.
  26. His plan was to bury himself in the prison garden and sneak out over the fence after hours with a sheet tied into knots. It didn't work. Now Edwin Cota will spend an additional 2 to 15 years in prison for trying to escape.

  29. State Senator Gretchen Whitmer's name has been thrown around as an early challenger to Gov. Rick Snyder in 2012, in large part to her recent and very visible criticisms of the governor. But columnist Tim Skubick says "at the end of the day 'anger' can only get you so far."
  30. The Tigers will have new batting practice caps in 2013. Uni Watch reviewer Paul Lukas gives them a C-, saying the thought of Jim Leyland wearing one is 'embarrassing.' Our comments have mixed feelings on them. What say you?
