Florida Department of Environmental Protection

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the lead agency for environmental management and stewardship, is one of the more diverse agencies in state government - protecting our air, water and land. DEP is divided into three primary areas: Regulatory Programs, Land and Recreation, and Water Policy and Ecosystem Restoration. Florida's environmental priorities include achieving regulatory certainty, consistency and protection, getting the water quality and quantity right in Florida, and ensuring our residents and visitors have more opportunities to enjoy Florida’s award-winning state parks.

DEP Compliance Rate Hits Five Year High in 2012

In 2012, facilities considered in significant compliance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection rules and regulations rose to 94 percent, a five-year high and a four percent increase from 2011. This improvement comes after the Department held more than 600 workshops, compliance assistance meetings and outreach events for private businesses, government groups and the public last year.

The remaining six percent represents facilities that are out of compliance, which has historically been between 10 and 14 percent. Significant compliance is defined as facilities in full compliance -- which represents 72 percent of facilities -- and facilities that have violations that present no environmental harm, such as tardy paperwork - equaling 22 percent. The Department regulates roughly 75,000 facilities statewide.
