Great article, but oddly, most of the photographs of the images are splayed, scrunched, and otherwise not visible. I'm using the latest version of the Firefox browser, in Windows 8!

Suspend teased white fibreglas on invisibly fine fishing line and you can have this same effect permanently.

The Civilization Starter Kit has some great ideas not just for Post Apocalypse, but for small scale farming and self sufficiency.

Problematically Open Source Ecology appears to be under (not) funded and subject to highly variable interest.

The engine powered modular power unit is a great idea, but the hydraulic pumps, motors and pistons used are not inexpensive and are also not very efficient at engine power to work conversion.

Those problems aside, the simplicity of the designs and their effectiveness at undertaking a wide and necessary range of tasks effectively is remarkable.

Truly great concept, I hope it can be realized practically.

I have worn 100% knitted shoes made in Spain over 20 years ago and still own them. They also have one sportshoe type artificial sole.

NIKE this is NO big invention!

Wow pretty cool stuff and I'm surprised they are things. I was expecting to see maybe a forth to be software related which I don't really consider inventions per se.

I think this project is very promising. But I believe that it is better to start to execute the project Audio Internet, Internet without using the screen only voice interface. For more details about this project can be found here http://vvzabl.blogspot.ru/

The deepsea challenger was _not_ designed by James Cameron, it was commissioned and sponsored by him, and designed by legendary submersible designer Graham Hawkes, who had been working on this project for decades before he met Cameron, Richard Branson, and his other supporters.  I know this is just a popular top-50 list, but as a major media publication it would be best to do some fact checking and be more precise on things like this.

The Tesla Model S is not a new invention. Electric cars actually came out before combustion powered cars. This is the reason why history needs to be a mandatory subject that is forced onto students or else we will keep pumping ignorant people like this author of this article.

@AlanReece The author didn't claim that this is the first electric car. He/she simply said that it terms of possible distance traveled with a single charge and top speed the Tesla Model S is one of the most advanced electric cars ever created.

ralong68

@crazycat @AlanReece The author did not say any of that directly, you inferred it. The problem with this "article" is that is superficial. It doesn't provide ant context, many items where improvements not true inventions.

Wingsuits are not something invented in 2012. They've been around since the 1930s, in fact. Suits more or less like the ones most folks use today have been around for about forty years. Also, the sony camera? It's just a slightly fancy point and shoot, and doesn't deserve to be on this list next to actual new inventions. Might as well put this year's android phones up there if you're doing that. There's already a class of cameras that bridge the gap between point and shoots and SLRs. They're called, simply enough, "bridge cameras".

The rest of the list is generally pretty good, though.

The Tesla Model-S is proof that Silicon Valley tech-heads and automotive veterans can work together to create an amazing game-changer, far away from Detroit. If they can ramp up production and get their business model in order, Tesla will perhaps be the company of the decade, if not the century. I have driven a Tesla Roadster for an extended period. Based on that experience, I do not want to own another car based on internal combustion. As exciting as it was, the Roadster wasn't the car for me. But from scores of glowing reviews, I suspect that the Model-S may fill the bill. The only hurdle now is the financing. I think I am far from alone in this ambition.

Cool: D here it is probably clear a lot of technology that can be used in flying suits, which certainly is not as "too many years" to come on the market `D looking forward to testing them: P hehe

Some incredible product design feats in the list, that's for sure... Obviously I'm overzealous on Inventing being in the product design and development service business; however, I hope this article plants a seed in readers' minds to get the ball rolling on good invention ideas that they have thought of - Maybe something that will make the 2013 list!

If it "lasts only moments" and is generally useless, how is it an invention that tops your list?
