On Wednesday, September 21, 2011, the House is scheduled to consider S.Con.Res. 28 under a suspension of the rules requiring a two-thirds majority vote for approval. S.Con.Res. 28 was introduced by Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI) on August 8, 2011, and was approved in the Senate by unanimous consent on September 8, 2011. The bill was referred to the House Committee on House Administration the following day and no additional action was taken.
S. Con. Res. 28 would authorize the use of Emancipation Hall in the Capitol Visitor Center for an event on November 2, 2011, to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service, United States Army, in recognition of their dedicated service during World War II. The bill would require that any physical preparations for the conduct of the ceremony be carried out in accordance with such conditions as may be prescribed by the Architect of the Capitol.
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was regiment of the U.S. Army comprised of all Japanese American soldiers which was established in 1943 and fought primarily in Europe until 1945. According to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team Historical Society, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was actually composed of two distinct units: the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Infantry Battalion. The 442nd was highly distinguished and decorated for its service in the European campaign and 21 of its members were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
