Hensarling Statement on Passage of Short-Term Continuing Resolution
WASHINGTON – House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) today issued the following statement on the passage of the short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) designed to prevent a government shutdown and cut wasteful government spending while the Senate delays consideration of H.R. 1.
“House Republicans listened to the American people and passed legislation to keep the government open through the end of the fiscal year while cutting a record amount of spending. Instead of taking up that bill, Senate Democrats countered with an offer to maintain the status quo.
“Between fiscal years 2008 and 2010, the Democrats increased garden variety government spending by nearly 25 percent – an 84 percent increase when you include the stimulus. Right now we’re borrowing 42 cents on the dollar, much of it from the Chinese, to fund the Democrats’ job destroying spending spree. And we’re sending the bill to our children and grandchildren.
“The Senate Democrats’ plan to maintain this reckless level of spending is not an acceptable option. To foster the environment needed to create jobs and grow the economy, we must stop spending money we don’t have. This short-term CR takes another very important step in that direction, and it’s only a start.
“Short term resolutions like this are only necessary because Democrats, led by then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Harry Reid, failed to produce a budget and failed to pass spending bills. Now Senator Reid is delaying consideration of the House-approved bill to fund the government through the end of September.
“If Democrats want to join us in moving a longer-term solution that will keep the government operating while cutting job-crushing spending, they can start by calling on Senator Reid to begin consideration of H.R. 1.”
