Good Health Habits Will Help Slow the Spread of Swine Flu!
Monday, April 27, 2009 (24 reads)

In light of the public’s concern over the Swine Flu (H1N1 flu), the American Red Cross and Center for Disease Control and Prevention are reminding everyone how you can practice basic health and preparedness steps to limit the spread of the flu and reduce its impact.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (long enough to sing the ABC song)
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands afterwards.  If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow or upper arm.
  • Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth to keep flu germs from entering your body.
  • Stay home if you are feeling sick. Get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick, too.
  • Avoid sharing objects—such as utensils, cups, bottles and telephones. Germs are spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • For additional information on Human Swine Flu, visit www.lapubilchealth.org or www.cdc.gov or call 1-800-CDC-INFO.
In additon, we recommend that everyone review and update thier emergency preparedness plans.  The Red Cross recommends storing a two-week supply of food, water and household necessities such as laundry detergent and toilet paper. A gallon of water per person per day should be stored in clean plastic containers. Family preparation steps should also include storing formula for infants, food for special nutritional needs, essential medicines and medical items, and extra food for pets.  Please click on the BE RED CROSS READY link on the top of the Arcadia Chapter home page for a presentation on how you can prepare for emeregencies.

Earthquake in Italy
Monday, April 06, 2009 (0 reads)

In the early hours of April 6, a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the city of L'Aquila in central , 75 miles northeast of Rome . The earthquake was the worst to hit the region in nearly 30 years.  Early reports indicate that buildings have collapsed and at least 90 people are dead and 400 injured. These numbers are expected to increase as search and rescue efforts continue. Tens of thousands of people are now homeless in the city, home to 70,000 people.  The Italian Red Cross is on the scene assisting with search and rescue efforts, providing emergency care for the injured and serving meals to those who have been affected. In consultation with the Italian Red Cross, the International Federation is currently assessing the need for additional support to the efforts of the Italian Red Cross. The American Red Cross is at the ready to provide assistance if requested. For those with inquiries regarding U.S. citizens living or traveling in Italy , please contact the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at 1-888-407-4747 or 202 647-5225. Are You Ready for an Earthquake?
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 (81 reads)

A 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck about 4 miles southeast of Diamond Bar at 9:51 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2009.  Beginning on Monday, March 21stthrough Wednesday, March 25th, the Bombay Beach area near the Salton Sea experienced a cluster of over 60 small earthquakes, with the largest measuring 4.8 magnitude.  Thankfully, there have been no reports of damage or injuries associated with these earthquakes.  While there is little chance of these earthquakes triggering a larger quake on the San Andreas Fault , it is imperative that everyone take the necessary steps to be ready for an earthquake.  The most important thing you can do is DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON.
