Virginia Divisions Earn AP Honors
Twelve Virginia school divisions made the College Board’s third annual AP District Honor Roll by raising achievement on AP tests while increasing access to the college-level courses. The honored divisions are Bristol, Chesterfield County, Fauquier County, Gloucester County, Hampton, Northampton County, Portsmouth, Powhatan County, Prince William County, Roanoke County, Rockingham County and Virginia Beach. Governor’s STEM Academies
The Board of Education recently approved the commonwealth’s 16th Governor’s STEM Academy. Designed to expand options for the general student population to acquire STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) literacy and other critical skills, knowledge and credentials that will prepare them for high-demand, high-wage, and high-skill careers in Virginia. Each academy is a partnership among school divisions, postsecondary institutions and business and industry.Virginia's public schools are beginning a new trend line with the implementation of more challenging standards and assessments. The goal is to build on the progress already made under the Standards of Learning program and ensure that all graduates possess the knowledge and skills needed for success in college and the workplace.
