HawaiiThe MBDA Business Center located in Honolulu, HI is operated by the University of Hawaii. The center is part of a national network of funded centers located in major cities throughout the United States.

The MBDA Business Center Honolulu fosters the establishment and growth of minority-owned businesses in America.The center works with minority business enterprises to generate increased financing and contract opportunities and to create and retain jobs.

The center is partnered with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Shidler College of Business, under the management of the Pacific Business Center. Our mission is to cultivate and support the entrepreneurial spirit in the Hawaii minority community: its individuals, businesses and organizations.

Performance Overview

In FY2011, MBDA helped Hawaii minority-owned businesses obtain 49 contracts totaling $19,935,558 and $8,773,100 in capital through
six financial transactions.

For clients with gross annual revenues of $500,000 or more, the MBDA Business Center completed 43 transactions totaling $24,863,337. For
clients with annual gross revenues below $500,000, the MBDA Business Center completed 12 transactions totaling $3,845,321.

MBDA assisted Hawaii minority-owned businesses in creating 42 new jobs in FY2011.

Staff Information

Dana HauanioDana O. Hauanio is Director of the MBDA Business Center Honolulu (MBCH), located at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. In this role, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Dana manages a team of business consultants that provide technical assistance to minority business enterprises in the local community. During her tenure, MBCH has assisted 350 MBES in providing over $325 million dollars of economic activity.

Prior to MBCH, Hauanio spent six years at the Native Hawaiian Revolving Loan Fund (NHRLF) Program funded by U.S. Administration for Native Americans and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. As the NHRLF Manager, Dana managed a $28 million lending and training program for Native Hawaiian owned businesses unable to secure conventional financing through traditional lending sources. Hauanio started her professional career in 1995 as a commercial credit management trainee with the Bank of Hawai`i. Ms. Hauanio relocated to San Francisco in 1998 to work as a Senior Commercial Underwriter for now U.S. Bank, specializing in capitalization of mid-sized regional corporations. In 2000, Dana was promoted to Small Business Banking Manager, focusing on banking services to small business clients in the Northern California marketplace.

Hauanio, a native of Hawai`i, considers herself a ‘source of business information’ for entrepreneurs looking to expand their current operations. Her involvement in business technical assistance community and her longstanding interpersonal relationships have created business growth and job creation for many minority-owned businesses (MBEs) throughout her career.
