Deputies investigating body found in canal near Hudson Beach

HUDSON — A man's body was found floating in a canal Saturday afternoon near Hudson Beach, authorities said.

Pasco County sheriff's deputies were investigating the man's death, but said there were no obvious signs of foul play.

Fire extinguished at Seffner mobile home

SEFFNER — Hillsborough County Fire Rescue extinguished a fire Saturday morning at a mobile home in Seffner, officials said.

The building off of Sir Lawrence Court had no power and was being used as a storage facility. There was no one was inside at the time of the fire, officials said. Four units and 16 crew members responded to the scene and no injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation.

Live-in handyman charged in Port Richey woman's death

PORT RICHEY — A Port Richey's woman's live-in handyman was charged with murder after he was found wandering around in bloody clothes early Saturday not far from the home they shared, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said.

Kelly Bennett, 35, was found dead just after 1 a.m. by her teenage son at their home in the 9200 block of Wolcott Lane. Detectives believe she was killed around midnight, the Sheriff's Office said.

PALM HARBOR — A small fire turned out to be a big problem for a man accused of setting up a marijuana growing operation in his home.

Authorities were called just before 8:40 p.m. Friday to 3749 Appleton Court after getting reports of smoke.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Johnny Manziel tiptoed the sideline for a 23-yard touchdown on Texas A&M's first drive of the game.

State asks judge to shut down unlicensed military school with a history of mistreating kids

State officials asked a judge Friday to shut down an unlicensed Port St. Lucie children's home that for years has been allowed to operate despite evidence it has hurt kids in its care.

In an 80-page petition, attorneys for the Department of Children and Families cataloged more than a dozen incidents in which its investigators found evidence children were neglected, injured or otherwise mistreated while in the care of Alan Weierman, the self-professed "colonel" who runs Southeastern Military Academy.

Florida Gators tight end Jordan Reed to enter NFL draft

GAINESVILLE — Tight end Jordan Reed, the Gators' leading receiver this season, announced Friday that he is skipping his senior season and entering the NFL draft.

Reed caught 45 passes for 559 yards and three touchdowns in being named to the All-SEC first team. He joins safety Matt Elam and defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd, who announced their intentions to leave after Wednesday's Sugar Bowl loss to Louisville.

State reviews paint good picture of Largo work release center, with some concerns

LARGO — Although escapes and violent crimes allegedly committed by inmates have recently caused controversy for a Largo work release center, state officials have previously given the facility positive reviews.

The 280-inmate Largo Residential Re-Entry Center — the largest work release center in Florida — opened in 2008. Records show it had the highest number of escapes during the past three years — about one every other week.
