Celebrity Women Get Real About Body Image Issues

She may have won two Golden Globes last weekend for her HBO series, Girls, but lately the most-talked about topic in regards to writer, filmmaker, and actress Lena Dunham has been her weight, not her talent. Radio host Howard Stern is in hot water for calling Lena a "little fat chick." And while Lena told David Letterman last week that the comments "put me in the best mood," the 26-year-old has been honest that she's had a love-hate relationship with her body, despite displaying it so freely on her show. She told New York Magazine:

"It's a very specific body. Even great reviews will be like: chubby, portly, overweight. . . . Sometimes I'm like, 'Ugh, how did I make myself the guinea pig for this?' But on the other hand, hating my body has not been my cross to bear in this life. Which I feel very lucky about."

Several famous women have opened up about their struggles with body image and eating disorders. Katie Couric revealed on her talk show that she struggled with bulimia when interviewing another famous lady who's dealt with eating disorders, Demi Lovato. And Lady Gaga, who has faced criticism about her weight gain, launched a movement called A Body Revolution to encourage body acceptance. She said she started it to "inspire bravery," adding, "Be brave and celebrate with us your 'perceived flaws,' as society tells us. May we make our flaws famous, and thus redefine the heinous."

Many celebrity women have courageously talked about what they don't like about their bodies, their past eating disorder issues, and how they've overcome a negative body image. Let's be inspired to accept our bodies just how they are with these encouraging words now!

Presidential Displays of Affection: Barack and Michelle Show Off Their Love

Updated Jan 16 2013 - 11:22am · Posted by · 2 comments

The country, or at least Obama supporters, let out a collective "aw" on election day when Barack Obama tweeted "Four more years" along with a picture of him and the first lady hugging. It was a reminder that we get another term of the adorable first couple in the White House. Barack continued his love fest for Michelle in his acceptance speech, telling the crowd of cheering supporters: "Michelle, I have never loved you more. I have never been prouder to watch the rest of America fall in love with you, too."

As a couple, the Obamas have also managed to grow cuter over 20 years of marriage. They're not ones to shy away from hand-holding or kissing while at a White House event or on the campaign trail. Before we get to see the president and first lady show the love at the inauguration this weekend, take a look back at their best public displays of affection.

Affair Proof Your Marriage

Updated Jan 16 2013 - 10:15am · Posted by · 0 comments

We're happy to present this story from one of our favorite sites, Fox News Magazine. Today, Rachel Sussman shares tips for keeping infidelity at bay.

The discovery that your partner is either emotionally or sexually involved with another is one of the most devastating experiences one can live through. Being in a relationship carries many different definitions and implications, yet the desire that your partner remain sexually faithful seems to be nearly universal.

There are numerous reasons why people cheat, and it’s good to know them so you’ll be aware to not let them seep into your own marriage.

Most people report that they cheated because they felt emotionally disconnected and lonely in their marriage. Others complain that they felt unimportant or undervalued by their partner. And some say that it was because of a decrease in sex, sexual dissatisfaction, and/or boredom in the bedroom.

My analogy is that a strong marriage is like the foundation of a beautiful home — if you give it the maintenance it needs, it will stay robust and retain its value for years to come. Alternatively, if you let it hang out there through stormy weather, it will slowly crack and bring the walls down with it.

So if you want to keep your marriage robust and affair proof — here are a few tips for relationship and monogamy success:

  • Marry the right person for the right reasons at the right time in your life. You should feel completely confident during your engagement period that you are marrying a person whose character, nature and goals are fully in line with yours.
  • Couples need to understand that marriage is a huge commitment and that staying happily married requires a lot of compromise and endeavor. Before you wed, speak to your partner about your feelings about fidelity. Surprisingly few newly engaged couples seem to have these frank discussions, some of which can serve to avoid painful misunderstandings later on.
  • Have intimacy in your marriage. Long walks on the beach are much more than a cliché — they truly serve a purpose.
  • Boost each other up. Couples can tend to be very critical toward each other, and too many years of criticism with the absence of praise can take a huge toll on a love bond. Don’t let this happen to your marriage. Be the president of your partner’s fan club, and be sure to regularly remind them how terrific they are.
  • Have fun together. When the chips are down, you want to think of your partner as someone who brings joy into your life. Laughter is such a great elixir and it really helps keep couples together.
  • It’s important to have sex — and even better to have great sex. Being sexual helps you feel more connected to your partner. It makes you feel cared for, attached, and comforted. It’s a nonverbal experience that helps you communicate in an entirely different way. And, it’s fun!

Obama and Biden Unveil Sweeping Gun Control Plan as NRA Goes After President's Daughters

Updated Jan 16 2013 - 11:46am · Posted by · 2 comments

President Obama and Vice President Biden addressed the nation today, sharing their plans to curb gun violence in the wake of the Newtown tragedy. The Obama administration's agenda includes a proposed ban on assault weapons, universal background checks, limits on high-capacity magazines, and more. It's going to be a tough political road for Obama and his backers, as gun-rights supporters in Congress will likely put up a fight. But today the NRA ironically helped get momentum on the president's side when it released an outrage-inducing political ad. The NRA tried to paint the president as a hypocrite by invoking efforts to keep his daughters safe.

The ad asked, "Are the president's kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools?" You can watch the ad, which the White House called "repugnant" and "cowardly," above. And weigh in: do you think Obama will succeed in passing new gun laws?
