NUNNELEE SUPPORTS SPENDING CUTS, MISSISSIPPI JOBS

NUNNELEE SUPPORTS SPENDING CUTS, MISSISSIPPI JOBS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Alan Nunnelee (MS-01) issued the following statement on the passage of the H.R. 2055, the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2012.

“Though it is not perfect, I support H.R. 2055 because for the first time since the years following World War II we will cut discretionary spending 2 years in a row. The bill eliminates 42 government programs, and includes 0 earmarks.  In contrast, Democrats grew spending by 84% and included 18,000 earmarks in their final two years in control of the House. Despite fierce resistance from President Obama and his allies, we are heading in the right direction on spending,” stated Nunnelee.

The legislation included an amendment Rep. Nunnelee inserted into the Energy and Water Appropriations bill that will prohibit any Federal agency funded by the bill to hire an employee that is not verified through the E-Verify Program. “I am pleased that the conferees included this common-sense amendment that will make it much more difficult for federal contractors to employ illegal aliens,” said Nunnelee.

Additionally, language that would have harmed the window coverings industry in Mississippi was not included. “One of my priorities in Washington is to protect Mississippi jobs; I fought to ensure senseless regulations that would damage Mississippi manufacturing and sales were not included,” Nunnelee said.

Congressman Alan Nunnelee represents Mississippi’s First Congressional District and serves on the House Appropriations Committee.  This is his first term.
