The new year is in full swing, and my Birds are flying high. Let's take a look at some of the better stories this week, and everyone keep their fingers crossed for Sunday. Hopefully they do great things, but let's spend a little time checking in with the world outside our little section of South Jersey. Also, the next time I speak with you, we will have a brand-spankin'-new President, a man I believe is bound to do great things for this country if everyone just looks past their own prejudices and gives the man his chance.

FRANKLIN TWP. -- A 60-year-old gas station attendant was attacked by five men in Malaga Thursday.

The attendant at the U.S. Gas station on Route 47 at the Route 40 overpass, a Millville man, was hit several times in the head with a crowboar by his five assailants, who were in their 20s, said police.

GLOUCESTER TWP. -- Police officers attempting to serve a warrant on Thursday afternoon had to chase down the suspect on foot.

The warrant charges Hector L. Velazquez, 29, of Theresa Place in Blackwood, with hitting a victim in the head with a handgun in the 700 building of the Millbridge Apartments on Wednesday, police said.

CAMDEN -- Eight murder indictments that were handed down by a Grand Jury on Jan. 7, 2009, were made public Wednesday.

Following are the names of the accused and the charges against them:

CAMDEN -- A 33-year-old man and 46-year-old woman, both residents of the city, were sentenced Thursday in connection to the 2005 strangling death of the woman's husband.

CAMDEN -- A 41-year-old man from West Babylon, NY, was arrested Thursday morning in connection to a September 2008 car crash that killed three people in Cherry Hill.

BRIDGETON -- The 2005 shooting death of Hamilton Blackshear may have been the end result of a disagreement over a girl, according to court testimony Thursday.

Blackshear's son, Albert Blackshear, admitted Thursday that he had been having sex with the girlfriend of Kenneth Bartee, of Pittsgrove Township, leading to him being “jumped” at a party by Bartee and several other people.
