Carter commends achievements of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug

(WASHINGTON, DC) -- As the father of the Green Revolution, the late Dr. Norman E. Borlaug should be recognized for his contributions to the U.S. and the world.

Congressman John Carter (R-TX) today co-sponsored a resolution recognizing Dr. Borlaug, who is one of just five people to receive the Nobel Peace Price, a Congressional Gold Medal and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Dr. Borlaug, who most recently was a professor at Texas A&M University, passed away September 12, 2009. He was 95.

"Dr. Borlaug’s contributions have stabilized developing countries and they have inspired others to feed the world’s poorest people," Carter said. "He accomplished a remarkable amount of worldwide progress in his lifetime."

Dr. Borlaug helped save one billion people from starvation, according to the World Food Prize. His techniques continue to be used and studied for their effectiveness in developing and war-torn countries.

He was called "arguably the greatest American of the 20th century," by the Wall Street Journal.

"The compassion and intellect of Dr. Borlaug undoubtedly will be missed," Carter said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."
