Welcome the 113th U.S. Congress: systemically-corrupt, historically-gridlocked, incredibly unpopular by David Moore January 3, 2013
Update, 7pm ET, Friday Jan. 4th, 2013: Data from the 113th Congress is now live on OpenCongress. We have a fresh blog post coming soon on brand-new bills introduced over the past two days. Latest bill & member info for both chambers seems to be displaying fine, let us know if you see any glitches or have any questions, david at opencongress.org. OK cool.
Previously: The 112th U.S. Congress ended, as you likely know, with a sadsack pratfall of unaccountable public policymaking - a compromise between the two major parties avoiding the "fiscal curb" - via a vote on H.R. 8, specifically the House roll call 659 (257 aye, 167 nay, 8 abstain) - and previously by Senate roll call 251 (89 aye, 8 nay, 3 abstain). More info & fiscal what-cha-ma-call-'er links after-the-jump.

A Most-Viewed Senator
Sen. Claire McCaskill [D, MO] has recently been the subject of a series of revelations involving unethical air travel. Politico originally reported that McCaskill has charged taxpayers for 89 flights on a plane that she owns, some of which have been for political activities and should not have been paid for with public money. It was subsequently revealed that McCaskill owed almost $300,000 in personal property taxes on the plan, though she has since settled up that bill.
A Most-Viewed Representative
Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan [R, WI-1] has become one of the most influential House Republicans now that debates over deficits and the debt have taken the main stage. Sine 2008, Ryan has been the leading voice behind the Republicans' vision for lowering taxes, privatizing entitlements, and reducing discretionary spending in all areas except for the military. Most recently, Ryan drafted and won support for an alternative 2012 budget outline that would reduce deficit spending by cutting nearly $6 trillion in spending over the next decade.
