The Clock is Ticking… Support Word Up Books

WORD UP Books Indiegogo PERKSA Note From Word Up Books.

One week till our Indiegogo campaign ends! Thank you to everyone who has contributed! The campaign has been great so far, but we still have more to raise before we hit our goal by December 23. Please help in any way you can; contributions of $5, $10, $15 are still incredibly helpful, and all donations are tax-deductible. Here’s some big news: the United Palace of Cultural Arts is offering a challenge donation: if we raise at least another $5,000 between now and the end of the campaign, the United Palace of Cultural Arts will MATCH that with their own contribution of $5,000! The United Palace has been generously storing much of the bookshop inventory since we had to close our doors on August 31.

Jazzman Jonathan Batiste’s credo: Everyone should enjoy the wonders of jazz | NY Daily News

Jonathan Batiste is on a mission: To bring the joy of jazz to the masses.

That’s why the tall, thin pianist and his Stay Human Band are hosting two upcoming, free events in Harlem.

This Wednesday they’ll lead the “Jazz Is: Now” series of the National Jazz Museum, where Batiste serves as the associate artistic director. The concert will be at the Metropolitan Community United Methodist Church. Then on Dec. 21, Batiste and company will head to the museum, at 126th St. between Lexington and Park Aves., to kick off a “Make Music New York” winter parade through Harlem.

The New Orleans-born Batiste, who lives in Washington Heights, has been running the “Jazz Is: Now” public program for several years. (The organization is raising funds to build a world-class museum in the former Mart 125 space across from the famed Apollo Theater.)

“We designed the series as a groove that can fit any person of any interest level in jazz music,” says Batiste, 26. “We meet people where they are, as Carl Allen would say at Juilliard,” he adds, invoking the jazz drummer and artistic director of jazz studies there.

Batiste says that especially for those new to jazz, the sessions are interactive and inclusive. He uses a memorable session as an example of the initiative’s success.

Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School now has room for students to excel | NY Daily News

College planning has always been the main focus at this Washington Heights high school, but for years the students had no place to do it.

In the past, students at Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School were forced to meet their college counselors in the corridors.

Other times, they had to wait in long lines to conduct their critical conversations in a cramped office.

Not anymore.

WHEELS, as the school is better known, now encourages students to handle college-related matters in a revamped classroom known as the College Access Room (better known as “the CAR”).

The room, adorned with college banners and filled with books, computers and other resources, was transformed with a $65,000 grant from Capital One Bank and the Heart of America Foundation.

“The CAR has been tremendous. It’s been the center of activity,” said Principal Brett Kimmel, whose office is blanketed in paraphernalia from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

WHEELS, which serves grades six to 12, opened its doors in 2006. The school graduated its first class in June, and 100% of the students were accepted to college, Kimmel said. About 80% of that first crop of graduates are currently in enrolled in college, Kimmel said (some are waiting to begin in January).
